If you're hanging out at a place like Stubby's, odds are you first encountered Abandon Kansas as I did--through a Christmas song (probably "Oh Come All Ye Faithful"). The group started out as a bit of a joke (a band in Kansas), but they did well and their independent records were well received. So, when approached by Gotee--who could distribute their records nationally--it seemed like a plan. But, when sales dropped, the label started tinkering with the group. Wanting to be team players, Abandon Kansas went along with Gotee's "suggestions". Then the label brought back the mixes and the band discovered that everything they'd recorded, outside of the lead singer's voice, had been removed and replaced with a synth track. What's more, the label had rewritten the music--the beat, the chord progression--and, to their ears, the band thought the label had turned their Indie Rock sound into something suitable for a boy-band. A single was released under the Abandon Kansas name, but there was pretty much nothing from the actual band on it. So Abandon Kansas asked for a divorce, essentially, from Gotee.
They're writing music and getting ready to record a new album. Without Gotee behind them, though, they're going the crowd funding route with their campaign up on Indiegogo.
So why should we care? What's all this got to do with Christmas, Charlie Brown? Well, I'll tell you. As the fund-raising campaign continues, Abandon Kansas will be sending Christmas songs (newly recorded Christmas songs) to the backers of the album ($10 and up) at the rate of one a week until the 25th. These songs will be exclusively for the backers. That's at least 3, maybe 4, new and exclusive Christmas tracks from Abandon Kansas plus whatever else your pledge tier includes. Personally, I think they underpriced their tiers, but that just means its an even better deal for you and I. Surely this is the very definition of win-win. Especially if the Christmas songs sound as inspired as "O Come All Ye Faithful". The campaign continues through January 5th, but contribute early to get your Christmas songs before Christmas, right? Watch the video below or just head staight on over to Indiegogo. And let's all have a very merry Chrismas.
