The folks at Word/Curb have a bunch of releases on the schedule for October 2. These are budget priced 2-CD sets the label calls "Double Plays". What they've done is take some of the more popular artists in their stable and pair up a Christmas album with a Greatest Hits album from the same artist, then pricing them to sell (i.e. cheap). So, for example, the BarlowGirl "Double Play" features the 2008 album "Home For Christmas" paired with the 2010 collection "Our Journey So Far".
Labels routinely try to maximize "Fourth Quarter" (i.e. Christmas) sales by offering Christmas and Greatest Hits releases. And they also routinely will attempt to capitalize on the season and its sales trends by repackaging back catalog material in new and enticing ways. EMI did pretty much the same thing last year pairing up 2 previously issued Christmas albums from the artists on their roster.
The confusion arose when one online seller listed the BarlowGirl title as "Best Of Christmas" instead of "Best Of / Christmas". An Emily Litella moment if ever there was one. Other artists with "Double Plays" set for release October 2 include Randy Travis (here), Nicole C. Mullen (here), David Phelps (here), Jaci Velasquez (here), Diamond Rio (here), and PureNRG (here). So far, these haven't been listed at Amazon. Indeed, I've only seen them listed at Christian music and book stores. But nothing says they're exclusive to Christian distributors. Anyway, we've provided links if you're interested (click the album cover for a BarlowGirl listing). We'll try to get them on The List soon for you.
