Well, all's quiet on the Christmas music front, pretty much. Too quiet. But I'm not expecting all hell to break loose for a while, yet. Yes, we've updated the list with the few additional nuggets we could rustle up. I'd like to do a coming attractions post, but I like to have at least 8 or 9 attractions for one of those. Outside of the major country artists we've known about for some time, I've got maybe 3. And three just won't do. I even totally disappeared down the rabbit hole, tonight, and came up with nothing.
Well, almost nothing. This is the most interesting thing I've come across in the last few weeks. It's a new group that calls themselves Obree (after the legendary Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree...allegedly). Can't tell you much about the group as they only have accounts with Soundcloud and Twitter, as near as I can tell, and they don't say much about themselves in either location. And their new tune, "Christmas Trees", is only available for streaming at the moment. And you know darned well that I don't post streaming-only tunes, here, as a rule (if you and I can't get it, then its just another tree falling in the forest with no one around to hear it, as far as I'm concerned). But, my God, it's June and absolutely nothing is going on out there. I don't like it. It's quiet. It's too quiet, by gum. (Pauses, waiting for all hell to break loose. It doesn't.)
So, anyway, "Christmas Trees" by Obree is a nice Dream Pop number. It reminded me of something right away, but my brain is so full of "it's not Christmas season" cobwebs that it took me awhile to put my finger on it. And you know that my comparisons border on the bizarre, so I'll spin it your way in full awareness that I'm probably way off base. To me, it sounded like Pink Floyd's "Us & Them", if Tomita (God rest his soul) had been in the group (Stubby, WTF are you talking about, dude?)
Dream Pop is a bit of a specialty of my friend Jim over at Christmas Underground. Jim's been hibernating peacefully and I don't mean to wake him (he has yawned and stretched a tad on the Twitters; I don't do the Twitters). But, when he does wake up from his long winter's nap, maybe he can find out more about Obree and start working on them to get us an official release (or a free for all download!). In the meantime, know that Stubby is only half asleep at the switch. I still got my own deuce of gone peepers looking for the good stuff.
Obree is their name. Give a listen to "Christmas Trees".
