The cast of Fox television's "Glee" is back in the studio recording another Christmas album for the 2011 holiday season, according to the tweets of show star Lea Michele (Rachel). You'll recall that "Glee" released a full length holiday album just last year and, from a sales perspective, "Glee: The Christmas Album" was highly successful--peaking at number 3 on Billboard's album charts and selling more than any "Glee" album other than their debut.
So this certainly makes sense. Cast stars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith (Finn) and Chris Colfer (Kurt) have already been told that the upcoming season will be their last (they graduate) and there's no telling for certain how the show will fare with a new cast. Pretty much everything the cast does in the show is released anyway, so, if there was going to be another Christmas episode, there was going to be another Christmas album. And having a minimum of two Christmas albums ensures decades of remixing, remastering, and repackaging (a la The Carpenters, Dean Martin, The Beach Boys and so many others).
There's been no word at all on what songs the cast will be tackling this year. Certainly, there's still plenty of low hanging fruit ("White Christmas", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Sleigh Ride", "Winter Wonderland", "All I Want For Christmas Is You", etc.). But I'd like to make a prediction--and cast my vote, fwiw--that the producers will seize the opportunity to correct the biggest oversight of last year's disc and let Rachel do a Chanukah number or mashup.
Expect the new "Glee" Christmas album to be released in mid-November.
