Shellac Shack Santa is fixin' to slide down your chimney tonight with sounds of Christmas past at the awe inspiring speed of 78 RPM.
Roy Forbes is one of those folks I've come to know through a shared obsession with Christmas music. There are a few differences of note, though. For one thing, Roy is a noted Canadian Folk singer of 40 years who has actually had the opportunity to create some of his own Christmas music. For another, Roy is the master of all things 78. Oh, he collects vintage vinyl and the best of the modern CDs as well, but Roy knows more about 78s than pretty much anybody I know.
Roy hosts a weekly radio show on Alberta's CKUA where he shares some of his favorite records and 78s. Coming up tonight on Roy's Record Room is the annual visit from Shellac Shack Santa. That's at 6:00pm Mountain Time (which I believe is 8:00 here on the East coast). Through the magic of the Internets, you're all invited to the party. Just hop on over to the CKUA web site at the appropriate time and click on the "Listen Live" button.
Next Monday night, December 19, at 6pm (Mountain Time), Roy returns with A Fingerfulla Festive 45s on CKUA.

But wait, there's more! On Sunday, December 18th, Roy Forbes goes National on the CBC's North By Northwest program. It's a Snap, Crackle, Pop Christmas from 6:00am to 9:00am. Now I screw this up every year, but I believe that's Eastern Standard Time. But I also think you can catch a later feed on the West Coast. I'll try to clear that up for you before next week. But let me just say that Roy's Snap, Crackle, Pop shows are well worth whatever effort it takes to find them. I'm naturally a night person and I will do everything within my power to be up at the ungodly hour of 6:00am to listen to Roy's shows on the CBC when he does them (somehow the CBC shows are always 6:00am and, no, I don't always succeed in getting up on time, but I do try like the Charles Dickens). That's just how good Roy's shows are. Snap, Crackle, Pop Christmas is likely to feature 78s, 45s, and maybe even some 33s (who knows, Roy may surprise all of us with a 16 and two-thirds).
