Macross Frontier is a popular Japanese Anime Science Fiction space drama, centering on three characters (two of them pop singers) searching for a habitable planet in the year 2059. The story traces it's origins to a 1980s anime series which spawned a (pardon the pun) universe of these later shows, all of which share a common mythology at some level. May'n provides the voice of famous pop singer Sheryl Nome and Megumi Nakajima portrays aspiring pop singer Ranka Lee, while Yuichi Nakamura voices their common love interest, the young pilot Alto Saotome. There's an alien menace, yada yada, but the core of this anime tale is the love triangle among these three characters.
What does the music sound like? I have no idea, not being a watcher of anime. Well, very little idea anyway. Recently, the cast of the show sat down for an interview and "Songbird" played behind them at the tail end of the radio clip. Way, way, behind them. The sound was upbeat and overly dramatic (in a Celine Dion sort of way), draped, overall, in a fairly typical J-Pop production. It was hard to make out, but I do like J-Pop and I was intrigued enough to want to hear more.
This little item will cost you 2300 Yen at CD Japan, or about 28 American dollars (plus postage). Macross F fans should hurry if they want the "first press" edition with bonus extras (unspecified). A poster is also available.
