When is a Christmas album not a Christmas album? Well that's just silly. It's not a Christmas album if it's not a Christmas album. But, across the pond, they call something a Christmas album if its released in the month or two before Christmas, no matter what it is.
Susan Boyle, the lady from Scotland who amazed a world that had judged her on her appearance by singing beautifully on Britain's version of America's Got Talent (known as The X Factor), is back with a non-Christmas album Christmas album (or vice-versa). That moment in time from 2009, whether they'll admit it or not, was one of the inspirations of NBC's The Voice. Because human beings pre-judge others for all sorts of reasons--appearance being just one. But what should count in music is the voice. Anyway, after suffering a few health scares recently, Ms. Boyle has released an album designed to take advantage of the British definition of Christmas album without pissing off Americans. "A Wonderful World" does not contain a single Christmas song. Yet pretty much every song on the album is one that has received airplay during the festive season--beginning with the title cut (which is so clearly a spring and summer tune that we're all still scratching our heads after more than a decade of appearances on Christmas set lists). And the Disney favorite, "When You Wish Upon A Star" has been a seasonal standard for far longer, though it calls to mind crickets more than Christmas. Yes, even Madonna's "Like A Prayer" has puzzlingly popped up at Christmas time since its original release in 1989. Boyle has released two actual Christmas albums so far, so I think this was a very intelligent strategy on her part. An album that tugs at Christmas heartstrings without a single sleigh bell or Santa sighting is probably going to be a popular gift this Christmas. Boyle avoids a potential pitfall by not including "My Favorite Things" (though that's more an American controversy anyway). But the unfortunate trend of "duets with dead people" continues as Susan digs up Nat King Cole for "When I Fall In Love". Michael Bolton also makes an appearance (no, he isn't dead yet). And you already know that Boyle has an angel's voice. "A Wonderful World" is not on my shopping list this Christmas. But, for people who love this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they love. Shop around, though. Haven't seen one yet, but there's bound to be a bonus track edition "Somewhere Out There"...doncha think? Color me shocked, but Jordan did not include "Mary Did You Know" on his coming Christmas album. Here it is anyway, in a fine performance from "The Voice".
Jordan Smith will release his very first holiday album Tis The Season via LightWorkers/Republic Records, produced by the legendary Grammy Award winning David Foster.
Tis The Season sees JORDAN take on 12 Christmas classics with his own stunning style, spirit, and soul. These include standards such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Silent Night, and O Holy Night featuring the Grammy and Emmy Award winning The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Among the albums’ many highlights, “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” is a modern take on the timeless classic, and is Jordan’s personal favorite. It’s the perfect soundtrack to the 2016 holiday season. This fall, he joins Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith for their annual Holiday tour. It kicks off November 11 at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, and plays through December 18 in major markets across the country.
It's been a decade since Sarah McLachlan released "Wintersong", so it does feel like we're due another Christmas album from her. Of course, that doesn't count last year's "Classic Christmas Album" which included tracks from "Wintersong" plus some of the singles she's released over the years to showcase students from The Sarah McLachlan School. Newly recorded, "Wonderland" is a cross-section of traditional hymns and more modern favorites like "Silver Bells," "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire," "Winter Wonderland," and "Let It Snow". No newly written pieces, here, and that should make "Wonderland" an easy listen for folks who like their Christmas albums warm and familiar.
Acoustic Christmas is the new holiday album from Neil Diamond on Capitol Records. Set for release on October. 28 and followed Nov. 11 by a vinyl version, the holiday collection includes new material alongside Diamond's singular renditions of yuletide classics. Acoustic Christmas was produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M.) and Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan), the pair behind Diamond's previous release, 2014's Melody Road. The new holiday album is distinguished by an intimacy reminiscent of what Lee refers to as parlor music, small family groups singing together at home, and, of course, Diamond's inimitable voice, which the producer likens to hot chocolate. The profound and legendary singer/songwriter has enjoyed a global career spanning five decades, and has sold a staggering 125+ million albums, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
Amy Grant, one of the most iconic and beloved songwriters in Christian music, is set to release her first all new Christmas album nearly 20 years. Tennessee Christmas features an updated recording of the Amy Grant Christmas standard, Tennessee Christmas, 6 new songs and traditional Christmas favorites Baby, It's Cold Outside (featuring Vince Gill), O Come All Ye Faithful & Joy To The World. This brand new album showcases Amy's classic vocal with intimate and mellow arrangements, interspersed with personal stories and holiday memories. Featuring a team of acclaimed producers, this medley of seasonal tracks is sure to be a record that is returned to year after year.
Christmas music has become synonymous with Amy Grant over the years, which has led to over 2.7 million Christmas albums sold in her career. This season, Grant will embark on a west coast Christmas tour and stop at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee with husband Vince Gill for 9 shows. ![]() 1.
