Anna Gilbert's "Christmas" is just flat out gorgeous. Well conceived and perfectly executed. The 26 year old, born in Oregon and having worked with some of Nashville's finest producers, wrote and produced her first album at the age of 19. With that early start, she's at the perfect point in her career to record a Christmas album. And it shows.
Anna Gilbert carries both the Indie spirit of the Pacific Northwest and the meticulous craftsmanship of Nashville to her music, and specifically to this release. Add to the mix a heavenly voice that could only have been designed by God to melt your heart, and you have what should be the break-out hit of the season.
Gilbert performs well-worn carols with such love and tenderness as to make them fresh and new. The words live anew with us, because, its quite clear, they are living within her. Anna has written additional choruses for "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "Away In A Manger", but they're so well done as to leave the impression that this is how the songs were originally written and other artists must simply be omitting these verses. Anna's arrangements are fresh without being foreign. And the instrumentation is absolutely impeccable throughout. I don't know that I've ever heard an indie release that was so well produced. Gilbert also provides two songs from her own pen, "I Don't Want A Lot" and "Rest In The Light", both of which sound warm and comfortable, nestled in among the standards and carols. "Some Children" has never sounded so clear to me. And the album closes with a surprising and delightful Bluegrass jam.
I'm at a bit of a loss because, typically, I listen to an album with an ear for the standout track. Every song on this album is a standout track. Add "remarkable consistency" to everything else I've said.
Reverent and sentimental, soothing and uplifting, Anna Gilbert's "Christmas" will make the perfect soundtrack for a snowy afternoon or evening. Any time, really. Highly recommended for fans of Indie Folk/Pop (a la Colbie Caillat, Norah Jones, etc), but also for fans of classic artists like James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Indeed, highly recommended for anyone.
