Not long ago, we mentioned a new blog I'd stubbled across--Celtic Folk Punk. I finally got around to starting down their posts and the earliest (well, actually, the latest, but the first one you get to in reverse order) post that looked potentially Christmas was the entry on an EP from the Garlic Kings, a Folk Punk band out of Russia. And the idea of Christmas music from Russia--let alone Christmas Folk Punk from Russia--was, naturally, appealing to me, so I clicked on through.
This Christmas present from the Garlic Kings, "Yo-Ho-Ho Motherf#*@ers", only has one song that (without speaking Russian, at least) seems to relate to Christmas. But that one song was a great find! "Santa byl Skinkhedom" roughly translates to "Santa Was A Skinhead". The song contains all the joy and energy of the best Christmas Punk music from ages ago, before Punk morphed into Pop somehow (still trying to figure out how that happened). This track will sound amazing on your holiday mixtape; it sounds thoroughly festive and, because its in Russian, no one will even know if they're cursing up a storm. Speaking of which, "Shtormovaya" (if Google Translate is to be trusted) translates to "storm" (or, more accurately, "Sh#t Storm"). That one doesn't sound especially Christmasy. Nor does "Katorzhnaya 39 13", which seems to translate to "penal" (that's "penal", as in prison, not "penile" as in "you dick!"). "Bradobrey", on the other hand, does sound completely festive (might be the accordion and toy horns)--sounds like a Benny Hill soundtrack, actually. The translation for that one is "barber", though. So, for Xmas purposes, I'm sticking with "Santa byl Skinkhedom".
Songs like "Santa byl Skinkhedom" are precisely the reason I don't stop the hunt for Christmas music just because the season, itself, is over. There'll be another Christmas next year and there's far too much undiscovered gold to be found. You should definitely go get the free 4-song Ep from the Garlic Kings. Head to their web site and click on the cover art and it's all yours. No muss, no fuss, no email addy. It's that simple. And it's mmm-mmm-grrrreat!
