This is the fourth Volume (4) of the Christmas in the Mountains music album. This audio production is an annual release of local musicians from the High Country of the NC Appalachian Mountains and surrounding region.
Proceeds go towards helping those in need in our local communities via the Hunger and Health Coalition – a local nonprofit organization.
The Hunger and Health Coalition is proud to produce a peaceful and uplifting CD of Christmas music donated by local artists and musicians.
This is a local charity disc produced annually by the residents of western North Carolina's "High Country" (Appalachia), for the benefit of hungry and needy children. 100% of the proceeds goes to the local Hunger and Health Coalition. The Hunger and Health Coalition, which opened in 1982, is the only major food pantry and free pharmacy in the area. And the community's needs have grown tremendously in recent years. The coalition serves over 3 times as many families as it did just 6 years ago.
From the first notes of the Southern Accent's original, "Once Upon A Star", you know you're in store for something different. These days, even the Christmas music that purports to be "intimate" features big-city-overblown-production. "Christmas In The Mountains" represents a more rural, more peaceful, more organic experience. The performances feel truly intimate because, well, because they are. There's no pretense. Simplicity rules here. Honest performances and emotions. No sweetening or overdubbing. And, while the production values are excellent overall, there's no overkill anywhere. That's just not how they do things in Appalachia.
The performances are all top notch. The spirit is evident. These are good folks sharing their gifts with their friends and neighbors to help out the ones less fortunate. And you're welcome to come along. We get the Gospel Bluegrass of Southern Accent, traditional Folk music from Sound Traveler, Jazz from the Todd Wright Quintet, a too-beautiful-for-words instrumental piece with flute, "My Lily", and the sweet voice of Jessaca Presnell on "Silent Night". I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderful solo performances of Doug Kaufman, Andy Page, and The Blue Ridge Vocal Ensemble.
Truly, this an album full of highlights. And, by album's end, you feel as though you have an idea how Christmas in the North Carolina High Country might feel. Good people, good friends, good spirits, peaceful and warm. And that is high praise for any Christmas album.
If you've been conditioned to big productions and "only the best" performances, this may not be the disc you're looking for. But, for me, when the holiday rush and crush is making me wonder whether I can get through it without my head exploding--making me wonder how we ever got so far from the true spirit of the season--I put on one of the "Christmas In The Mountains" CDs and find a warmth and quiet that few CDs can bring me. I feel at home. And welcome.
