FREDRIK MAGNUSSON - NO CHRISTMAS

As usual, I've been sifting through piles of crap Christmas tunes, tonight, figuring there's got to be a pony in there somewhere. Dig long enough, you'll find something worth sharing.

I love the Alt Country/Indie Pop sound on "No Christmas (Until You're Coming Home)". Sounds like something that would have been cut in the early 60s. Very cool. The lyrics feel a bit clunky at times, but the sound is so tremendous the song easily overcomes that. Couldn't find out anything about Fredrik Magnusson, except that he's Swedish (I'm starting to think Magnusson is in Sweden what Smith and Jones are in America). Don't care. Love it.

"No Christmas (Until You're Coming Home)" is a free download on Soundcloud. There's an earlier Fredrik Magnusson Christmas song at the bottom of his Soundcloud feed. "First Christmas" is from 2012, but you can still download it free if you're so inclined.

I was both busy and tired, today. And, all day, I'm thinking that "By the time I get a chance to post this one, it'll already be everywhere". But, no. I just checked all my other favorite Christmas spots and I don't see this anywhere. I mean, not that its a competition. But, you know.

JudyK is a Swedish Indie Pop artist (as well as a songwriter, producer, DJ and feminist). Officially, "X-Mas Song (Longing For New Year)" is her second release, but, if you venture to Soundcloud, you'll find a few earlier things including an earlier version of this very song. The earlier version of "X-Mas Song" doesn't work as well for me, as stripped down and bare as it is. A song like this needs to be a tad lush to help heighten the irony, I think. The new version was recorded with the additional voice of Leo Bothen (and Hanna Ekstrom on the chorus).

Anyway, this is about as lovely an anti-Christmas song as you're going to find. Like all my favorite anti-Christmas songs, the music is sufficiently Christmassy (on the new version) that you have to pay attention to the words. Not that its subtle. The music, on its own, is a bit melancholy, but so's "White Christmas", so's "Silent Night". And you've got that "Longing For New Year" in the title.

I know the feeling and I suspect most people do. There are things going on in your life that, sometimes, you're not ready to share or deal with. All of a sudden, here's this holiday that absolutely demands that you be jolly. What's that all about? Ever been to a party where you're sure you're the only one not having fun? Yeah. Well, here's a song for you. "Merry Merry Christmas. Never show those tears." See that downward arrow on the widget? That's for you to download. Feel better now? I thought you might.

Incidentally, JudyK has a website where you can also order up an anti-Christmas sweater, if you're tired of appearing jolly at parties when you're not. Hey, at least you get invited to parties, right? So you got that going for you....which is nice.
