"(Don't Buy A) Ukelele For Christmas" is a cautionary tale from the Severn Ukes. Sure, it seems like a good idea at the time, but all those sleepless nights while the gift getter practices, practices, practices will have you regretting it.

The Severn Ukes are an eight-piece UK Uke band. Their delightful Christmas song can be downloaded from their website for free. All the band asks is that you "Like" them on Facebook and maybe leave a comment letting them know how you like the song. Fair enough.

And, in fairness, don't blame the band for the "cover art" which was my own concoction, using their logo and a picture of "Truman" from their Facebook site (Truman looks like a distant relative of Mrs. Katz...not her real name).

GABI DiPACE and JACOB BRAMOS - CHRISTMAS DREAM

Growing up in southern Florida, Gabi DiPace is used to warm and sunny Christmases. So a sunshiny Indie Pop Christmas song featuring a ukelele just seems natural to her. But even in the colder climes, I'm guessing a little holiday warmth is most welcome. We've had an awful lot of anti-Christmas and dark Christmas music this season (things that make you go hmm). Time to try and balance the scales a little bit. Even though "Christmas Dream" was released last year, its still free via Noisetrade. And lord knows we can use the sunshine.

CHASE ATLANTIC - ALL I'M MISSING IS YOU

I'm in the mood for something sweet, today. How 'bout a little Uke Pop?

Chase Atlantic dropped this little nugget on Bandcamp last year (they actually posted it the day after Christmas). It's worth mentioning that there's a Pop Rock band called Chase Atlantic in Australia. This isn't them. This Chase Atlantic is a trio of friends from Reno and Colorado Springs. They don't have very much music out there and that doesn't seem to bother them too much. Not everybody who likes making music wants it to take over their lives. Reading their Facebook page, it looks as though they get together when they can, make music if they feel like it and, once in a while perform at an open mic night. All that is interesting enough.

But "All I'm Missing Is You" is my kind of song. The story is basic enough. Everything is set for the perfect Christmas; the tree looks spectacular, halls are appropriately decked, chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, it's snowing outside. Just seems to be one thing missing. As basic as the story may be, the words and music are perfectly done. There's a palpable hopefulness. A kind of "Hey, it's the season of miracles. She'll be here. She has to be." sense. You can almost see the hero of our story looking out the window every 15 seconds in anticipation of her arrival. I don't think she's coming, yo. But I like that you believe. There's a bit of an underlying resentment, maybe ("what's Mr. Grinch got on me")--but just a tiny bit, buried far beneath the snow and sunshine. Anyway, its neat, its sweet, and its free.
