CD BABY
Dirk Etienne grew up with the Baby Boomers, cutting his teeth on Rock N Roll. But, as with many of us, there was always that "other music" in the background--the music of his father--the music we now call "the classics" or "the standards". Music performed by Frank Sinatra and Count Basie and Tony Bennett. Dirk's father worked for The Monterrey Jazz Festival and took his son with him every year. At some point, that was the music Dirk was attracted to. Dirk was working as a producer and sound engineer when his mother became ill in 2007. He recorded "Fly Me To The Moon" for her. And, with that, he decided this was what he wanted to do with his life.
"Music, Martinis & Mistletoe", Dirk's second outing as a Jazz singer, was so christened by one of the Californian's fans. But it's fitting. This is exactly the kind of album you'd want playing for the cocktail hour, featuring a smooth swing throughout. It'd make a fine tree trimming disc, as well. The arrangements are about what you'd expect, though Dirk does manage to Jazz up a few of the old carols. The instrumentation sounds flawless. And Dirk's singing is as smooth as an extra dry martini--shaken, not stirred.
