"Holiday Gumbo" would appear to be the band's third CD and first Christmas effort and, if you like New Orleans jazz, you're going to love "Holiday Gumbo". From the samples that were available, this is pretty much straight forward New Orleans jazz. Most of the arrangements come from saxman Mike Sizer's days with the Dukes of Dixieland. And there's a bit of the second-line style--on "O Holy Night" for example. But, more than anything, the clips reminded me of early and recent Dr. John, (skipping that trip to Rock and Roll he made in the middle), except with lots of horns. You'll also hear echoes of Huey Piano Smith; it's just inevitable because New Orleans sounds like New Orleans which doesn't sound like anything but.
The band takes it fairly straight on "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Rudy The Red Nosed Sax Man" sounds more like a Louis Prima jazz novelty. But "Frosty The Sneaux Man" and "Little Drummer Boy" alone make the album worth a listen. And, as a little chicory for your cafe au lait, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The North Texas Food Bank.
So far, this hasn't turned up at the usual spots like Amazon, but you can buy "Holiday Gumbo" direct from the N'awlins Gumbo Kings and laissez le bon temps rouler. T'ain't nothin' wrong w'dat, cher. Ooh la la, ki sa se bon.
