The Meshugga Beach Party combines Jewish folk music with authentic Surf Guitar (a la Dick Dale and Link Wray) for a truly rocking original sound, complete with a screaming organ and wipeout percussion. Who knew?
"Hot Rod Hanukkah" is not the band's first trip through the holidays. Indeed, a few of these songs appeared on Meshugga Beach Party's 2005 debut "Twenty Songs Of The Chosen Surfers", the band contributed to Double Crown's "Seasonal Favorites", and I, for one, wouldn't have kvetched had they included "S'vivon" from 2008's "Let's Go Shleppin'". But "Hot Rod Hanukkah" represents the band's holiday act fully realized, with many new soon-to-be favorites, and includes the title track which has (I believe for the first time ever) vocals! Oy Gevalt!
While it's one thing to take an old Jewish folk song and make it rock, it's quite another to take a Surf Guitar classic and make it Jewish. But that's Meshugga Beach Party's stock and trade and here they transform Duane Eddy's 1958 hit "Movin' and Groovin'" into "Shleppin' and Kvetchin'" with Mr. Eddy himself on hand to ensure that the result is 100% kosher.
So grab your surf board and hop in your woody--don't forget your Bubbie--and let's go Hanukkah surfin' now, everybody's learning how, come on dance the hora with meeee...with The Meshugga Beach Party. Bring your schmattah; this one's a schvitzer!
