I think the sun is setting on the American Idol empire. Since the season of Sanjaya, the records haven't been selling. Oh, sure, the real talents like Carrie Underwood, Daughtridge, and Kelly Clarkson are doing just fine, thank you very much. But Lee DeWyze can't get arrested. Has anybody heard from Taylor Hicks lately? And a lot of the runners-up are having trouble getting record companies to release their records at all. Ask Michael Sarver who recorded a Christmas album only to have the label turn him down cold. Sarver ended up raising money to issue the album himself. Point is appearing on American Idol is no longer a ticket to a career. Truth is it never was. Ask the folks on this collection. "American Christmas 2" has been on the drawing board for years, now, a follow-up to the mildly successful "American Christmas". Michael Johns, who contributes two tracks here, including his 2008 Christmas single "Another Christmas", has likely sold more records than the rest of this group combined. He'll be fine; he's actually good. Alexis Stone Lopez has proven through the American Christmas albums that she's extremely talented and she hits another home run on "Christmas Toy". Alexis was a season one contestant as was Nikki McKibbin. I always liked Nikki, but she didn't reach me here. Ayla Brown and Brandon Rogers acquit themselves nicely. The rest of the set is utterly disposable, including two poorly recorded live tracks (which sound like they'd have been hot recorded properly). If you're an Idol fan, you'll likely want this one in your collection. If not, there's not much here to change your mind.
