For the rest of us, The Sing Off is an NBC reality show that pits a cappella groups against each other. And, for anyone who thought otherwise, there are actually quite a number of different a cappella styles and groups, from jazz vocals, to street corner doo wop, to glee club, to full-on gospel. NBC's aim is to draw the top notch unsigned vocal groups from across the spectrum and test their mettle. Which, by the way, would be pretty cool--a metal a cappella group--but I haven't seen one lately. Anyway (I got a tad distracted), if you want an idea of what to expect, check the show's seasonal comp from last year, which featured the legendary Jerry Lawson (the original lead singer of The Persuasions).
As I mentioned, I don't watch the show. But my little bitty research machine tells me that Jerry Lawson & Talk of The Town only finished fourth last year and Sonos has already been eliminated this year. All of which does not speak well of the judges' musical taste. That's kind of like telling Elvis he wasn't good enough to make the Top Ten on American Idol. So forget the show. But, if you like fine a cappella holiday singing, get the album. 'K? Track list subject to change.
