This special Christmas album holds 28 fabulous Christmas songs in a mix of vocal songs and instrumental guitar songs. Both quiet ballads and special Rock 'n Roll / Pop songs. A rock & roll Christmas party with famous artists such as: Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers, Danny Everett, Sebastian Lightfoot, Lenny Clerwall, Pim Maas, Andy Tielman Tony Light, Rock Of Ages, and Nokie Edwards. With known and new Christmas songs, recommended!

This Rarity Records Dutch collection was originally released as a digital only set in 2010. Nearly a decade later, "Christmas Memories" arrives on hard copy CD. (The album was also released as "Rock 'n Roll Weihnachten").

"Christmas Memories" is a collection of Retro Rock--with a full buffet of the kinds of records you might have heard on early Rock stations in the 50s and early 60s. From an Elvis clone like Andy White to a sax driven instrumental from Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers to the Surf guitar of Nokie Edwards. Speaking of Nokie, he's one of the most familiar names on the collection, along with Davie Allen & The Arrows. But a lot of these artists are from overseas and maybe you know them, but I don't. Sue Moreno is a Dutch artist. The Taildraggers "Reindeer Bop" has been around since at least 2003. And there have been any number of groups calling themselves The Valiants and I get the feeling this isn't any of them. Most of these are Dutch artists (duh) and odds are there won't be any liner notes to help you on original release dates (though hope springs eternal; you never know with European labels). But, if you dig early Rock N Roll and Rockabilly and whatnot, I'm sure you can find some music here to either sooth or stir the beating drums in your head and heart.

You know how I love my Christmas music from far away lands. So naturally I look forward to Putumayo's annual contribution to the season. Often, the World Music label will focus on a specific country or genre, but, sometimes, they just throw everything up in the air and say "Let's have a party!" And 2018 is just such a year.

"Joy To The World" features 10 tracks and, while some will probably be familiar to you, Putumayo always finds some gems you haven't heard because we Americans don't always know what's going on in other countries, Christmas music wise. Like that track up top from Nossa Bossa Nova. Did you know they had an entire album of Christmas music, "For Christmas", released in 2012? Of course you did. But what about Inês Pupo & Gonçalo Pratas? Did you know about their Christmas song from 2009, "O Natal Já Começou" ("Christmas Has Begun")? Did ya? Huh? Probably not. I didn't. Language aside, the tune isn't from a Christmas album, but an album of assorted children's songs, "Galo Gordo". But it's pretty cool. Listen.

I don't understand a single word they're singing, but I love it. It's snappy.

Most of the songs on "Joy To The World" are your holiday favorites--just played or sung in a language or style that makes them fresh again. Italy's Arspop do a beautiful job with "Astro Del Ciel" ("Silent Night"). Also from Italy, Marina del Gaudio sings "Blanca Natale" ("White Christmas"). Fredérick De Grandpré adds a bit of French Canadian Lounge with "Noël Avec Toi" ("I'll Be Home For Christmas"). And Jan Luna puts an Hawaiian spin on "Winter Wonderland" ("Winter Wonderland"). Then it's off to Jamaica, mon, for "Frosty The Snowman" from The Mighty Diamonds. Watch out for Frosty, mon. He's blacking up, mon, carryin' a spliff an everyting. Leon Redbone always seems to fit in on a World Music mix and, here, we get his version of "Christmas Island". And you can find one minute song samples at Bandcamp.

But, you know me, I can't resist the opportunity to play the Blues. So here's Lynn August with "Christmas By The Bar-B-Que".
