Please note: the following video is NOT from Kenny's forthcoming Christmas album. It is from the 1998 collection "The 12 Soulful Nights of Christmas". I just prefer to have some sound. It is a music site, after all. I've debated this issue with the previous listings, here, this year, but I've finally broken in favor of sound.
Hailed by the New York Times as a "modern soul man," Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Kenny Lattimore is back with his first ever Christmas offering. The singer has garnered Soul Train and Stellar Awards nominations as well as the NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist. His nuanced vocals have graced projects by a diverse array of artists from Musiq Soulchild and Rachelle Ferrell to Nancy Wilson, Brian Culbertson and Kanye West. In collaboration with Grammy Award winning producer Aaron Lindsey, this Holiday album is sure to be an instant classic.
It's been a decade since Sarah McLachlan released "Wintersong", so it does feel like we're due another Christmas album from her. Of course, that doesn't count last year's "Classic Christmas Album" which included tracks from "Wintersong" plus some of the singles she's released over the years to showcase students from The Sarah McLachlan School. Newly recorded, "Wonderland" is a cross-section of traditional hymns and more modern favorites like "Silver Bells," "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire," "Winter Wonderland," and "Let It Snow". No newly written pieces, here, and that should make "Wonderland" an easy listen for folks who like their Christmas albums warm and familiar.
With 100 days left until Christmas, She & Him have announced their latest album, Christmas Party. The holiday follow-up to 2011’s A Very She & Him Christmas features guest appearances by Jenny Lewis, the Chapin Sisters and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley.
She & Him’s sixth album features holiday classics like Darlene Love and Spector’s “Marshmallow World,” Bing Crosby’s “Mele Kalikimaka” and Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolph.” However, in the quirky duo’s true fashion, the LP will also include lesser-known songs, such as folk-singer Vashti Bunyon’s “Coldest Night of the Year” and Frank Sinatra’s “Christmas Memories.” Modern-pop favorites Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and The Chipmunks’ “Christmas Don’t Be Late” will cap off the festivities.
Acoustic Christmas is the new holiday album from Neil Diamond on Capitol Records. Set for release on October. 28 and followed Nov. 11 by a vinyl version, the holiday collection includes new material alongside Diamond's singular renditions of yuletide classics. Acoustic Christmas was produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M.) and Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan), the pair behind Diamond's previous release, 2014's Melody Road. The new holiday album is distinguished by an intimacy reminiscent of what Lee refers to as parlor music, small family groups singing together at home, and, of course, Diamond's inimitable voice, which the producer likens to hot chocolate. The profound and legendary singer/songwriter has enjoyed a global career spanning five decades, and has sold a staggering 125+ million albums, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
Loretta Lynn's only Christmas album to date was released in 1966...half a century ago. "Country Christmas", which contained the original version of "To Heck With Ole Santa Claus", has been repackaged and re-issued numerous times since then--somehow never including either side of her 1974 single, "Let's Put Christ Back In Christmas"/"Shadrack The Black Reindeer".
A few years ago, Loretta began letting people know she had a new Christmas album she intended to release, though she wanted her new non-holiday record (which ended up being this year's "Full Circle") to be released first. "White Christmas Blue" revisits many of the tracks from Loretta's "Country Christmas", includes a few Christmas carols not on that record, plus the title track, which is a new composition written by Loretta and Shawn Camp (who also provides backing vocals). Loretta is currently recovering at home, following surgery after a fall, but intends to be back on the road shortly. Now 84, the Coal Miner's Daughter is still in good voice and is usually working constantly. "White Christmas Blue" is scheduled to arrive on both vinyl and CD on October 7.

Jackie Evancho amazed the world with her series of performances on America's Got Talent when she was just ten years old. She didn't win that competition, coming in second to Michael Grimm, however, the fame of Jackie Evancho has surpassed that of Grimm. Jackie Evancho possessed one of the most incredible voices ever heard coming from a young child of ten. She easily awed the judges and the audiences with her commanding performances. She was signed to Sony Masterworks, and has since released five studio albums, one an EP, and the other four full-length sets. Of those, two has been holiday releases (O Holy Night EP – 2010, Heavenly Christmas – 2011). Her albums have sold well, with four of them charting in the Top 20 albums. For many of you, Jackie Evancho needs no introduction, You're already fans. But if you haven't heard her brand of classical crossover, then you're missing a rare phenomenon,. Today, Jackie Evancho is sixteen years of age with a vast life of possibilities ahead of her. As she trains further, her reach will increase and her fame will exceed even that of today. On October 28, Sony Masterworks and Portrait Records will release her newest album, a Holiday set that will feature two newly penned holiday-themed songs. The album is being called Someday At Christmas. with an offering of eleven songs. Someday At Christmas will feature classic greats like Placido Domingo, who shares vocals on “Pie Jesu From Requiem” and “Guardian Angel”, “Hallelujah” with Peter Hollens, the US ‘a cappella' singer, and “O Holy Night” with Vittorio Grigolo, the famed Italian operatic tenor. Other songs will be traditional favorites. OK. When you see text in color on this page, that's usually what the record company has to say about a release.
For my part, I wish there were a current video from the upcoming Christmas record. And here's why. When Jackie burst onto the scene on America's Got Talent, she was 10 years old. And, yes, she was amazing, but 1) I was concerned that she get to have a childhood, and 2) she was basically singing Classical music, which really isn't my thing. Now that Jackie is 16, I'm still worried about her childhood, though it seems too late to do anything about that. But she's (IMHO) much more amazing now and part of the reason I believe that is that some of her more recent work has been Pop or AC or, shoot, you might call some of it Alt AC (which would be something entirely new). But even the songs I might describe as Alt AC would certainly still appeal to the Classical Crossover people. And, frankly, bringing all of those vocal talents to something more Pop or AC or Folk Pop or whatever you want to call it, there is a capacity for music that is already gorgeous to transcend into something beyond heavenly. Honestly, I can't say I saw that coming. But that's partly because Classical ain't my thing and partly because I'm opposed to child singers on some basic level (let kids have a childhood). Funny, though. She seems to have so much going for her these days, I hope Jackie gets to have an adulthood, too. |
