Disc 3: Road To Freedom Go Where I Send Thee Goodnight My Baby Reuben James Bimini White Snows of Winter Reverend Mr. Black Tom Dooley A Round About Christmas Worried Man where Have All The Flowers Gone We Wish You A Merry Christmas We Three Kings O Holy Night | A specially priced 3 CD holiday gift set presented by the biggest selling group in the history of folk music. The Kingston Trio have long been considered "The Beatles" of folk music. They have had top ten hits such as Tom Dooley, M.T.A., Worried Man, Where Have All The Flowers Gone and many more. This is a one of a kind holiday box, specially priced with 3 CDs and makes the perfect present. |
Anyway, the other record they had was "The Best of The Kingston Trio", which I also loved. That was, of course, the original lineup--Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard. Loved every bit of it. "The MTA", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "The Merry Minuet". Who knew my Grandparents were so hip? (Psst. Pretty sure the Folk records were my Uncle's. He was a big red-headed guy--looked a little like Burl Ives, now that I think of it--who used to turn up for the holidays and important gatherings--always late--and he'd entertain us kids playing guitar and singing Folk songs). Anyway, rather a long way around of saying I've always felt a connection with The Kingston Trio. Went through a period where I didn't even know there still was a Kingston Trio until they turned up on one of those "Christmas In The Northwest" albums.
The Kingston Trio never stopped playing, though their recording became somewhat sporadic for a while. And, though the lineup changed a lot over the years, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds continued with them, off and on, for many many years. Nick retired for good in 1999 and Bob in 2004. The current lineup, who have only been The Kingston Trio since October of last year, include Josh Reynolds (Nick's son), Mike Marvin (Nick's cousin), and Tim Gorelangton. They are not heard on this collection.
THe music included on the three discs of "Holiday Box" is by The Kingston Trio of Bill Zorn, George Grove, and Rick Daugherty. Zorn was first a member in 1973, left in '76 and returned in 2004. Grove replaced Zorn in '76 and remained with the group until last year. Daugherty joined The Kingston Trio in 2005. You can't really replace a voice like that of Nick Reynolds, but the Zorn-Grove-Daugherty Trio was very good and actually got the band recording regularly again.
Disc One, here, is "Glad Tidings", a set from 2009, originally recorded for a European market DVD. Discs Two and Three are 2008's live set "On A Cold Winter's Night". Obviously, in you don't already have it, the one you want is "Last Month of the Year" featuring the original Kingston Trio. But, if you've already got that, this 3 CD set manages to be a Christmas collection, a career retrospective, and a live show all at once. Look for it November 9.
