Inspired by the prolific Sufjan Stevens, San Diego's Longstay began recording EP's of Christmas music for family and friends beginning in 2007. This year, they shared a track from each through their web site, posting one a day with "Pregnant Bride" being shared on Christmas Day with the promise "More gifts to come still..." From the 2010 edition, you can listen to (but apparently not download) "Come Thy Fount Of Every Blessing". Perhaps that's what's still to come. You'll find that one here. The rest, you'll find here. Neo-Folk artist Joshua James has dropped a big ol' Christmas present under your tree, allowing, for a limited time, free download of his holiday single "Christmas In Prison". Says Joshua, "Hark! Owe this tip to Santas Working Overtime. This Swedish Indie Folk/Pop duo began their career in music quite by accident. Poor and trying to find an inexpensive way to give gifts to friends and family for Christmas, they decided to record a Christmas CD-R. In doing so, they discovered their own musical gifts for writing and performing. That was back in 2007. Now, a few years removed, the married couple decided to listen to that Christmas CD-R and thought this song had enough charm to make it worthy of a wider audience. And I quite agree. For fans of the group, know that "Santa Claus Is Coming" is the first song the two ever wrote together. For those of us just learning of The Forest & The Trees, know that it's a pretty cool Indie tune and it's free at Bandcamp.

THE KOPECKY FAMILY - FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS

This EP from The Kopecky Family dates back to 2007, but it's a marvelous slice of Indie Rock and well worth rediscovering. "From Our Family To Yours" contains 2 Christmas songs and 2 "B" sides. Head over to Bandcamp to get the whole thing and feel free to investigate the Nashville band's more recent works ("Of Epic Proportions" is the latest--sort of a postscript to their latest CD "The Disaster").

And, while we may be a tad late on this one, how bout a free Thanksgiving song (while it lasts). The Kopecky Family has a widget for "Thankful? Why, yes!"--which we'll drop right below, here--and it's always good to add another song to the Thanksgiving playlist. Visit the band on MySpace when you're done where you just might find another free download.

HOLMES - THERE'LL BE NO CHRISTMAS WITHOUT YOU

In spite of the disturbing cover art, this is a really nice Indie Pop song from the Swedish band Holmes. Technically, this was just "released" yesterday, though "There'll Be No Christmas Without You" previously served as the soundtrack to an e-card from the band in 2007. The song is available for free download at Bandcamp until Christmas.

SOFIA TALVIK - SANTA

I love this woman. And every year Sofia Talvik releases a free Christmas song, so what's not to love? This year's effort is a fairly uptempo danceable indie track, even if the lyrics are the "I've been alone since we split up" type. It might be her catchiest yet. Hmm. I can't decide. Perhaps we need to compare "Santa" with her previous holiday efforts. Use the widget or head to Sofia's web site for "Santa", then head to Sofia's download page and pick up her Christmas singles from 2007, 2008, and 2009 (plus a couple of other tunes). By the way, this year's Christmas song is to benefit The Body Shop and ECPAT's world wide campaign to "Stop Sex Trafficking". And Sofia really likes it when you share on Facebook.
