This Baltimore Rap duo are not just queens of the underground, but have scored some above-ground chart action as well. Some of their music has been featured in the HBO series The Wire. WB soundtrack for the series, "Beyond Hamsterdam" includes their hit "When You See Us" (an album only track). And, now, Get Em Mamis are ready to "Party Like The New Year" with this free download available from their web site (on the music page) and at RCRDLBL. This is not your uptown highly polished rap, but rather reflective of the grit of the Baltimore streets. Included in the Get Em Mamis mix, though, is plenty of fun and lots of energy.

The DJ/Remix Master Ryan Cavanagh, also known as Slow Hands, has put his own particular spin on the New Year's classic "Auld Lang Syne". Smartly, the New York house artist starts with Guy Lombardo's original recording, then works his magic to bring it into 2010. The name Slow Hands apparently comes from Cavanagh's generally laid back and sultry sets. Cavanagh is considered a virtuoso of the genre, a master of make-out disco, and he's a favorite son of his label, Wolf + Lamb. Considering that most New Years Eve parties these days are dominated by house music, Slow Hands' mix of "Auld Lang Syne" is likely to win plenty of admirers--at the turntables and on the dance floor. No action in the video, but it does give you a chance to listen to the song (all 7 1/2 minutes of it), which you can download free from the label web site. The more I hear from this group, the more I like them. Persephone's Bees contributed a stand-out "Sleigh Ride" to "The Sounds Of Christmas, Volume 2" and now they close the year with a delightfully original and cool "Santa Baby", as perhaps the Flying Lizards might have done it once upon a time, had they ever thought to record "Santa Baby". Get the track free at the band's web site or facebook page. Black Cards is the current project of Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, featuring the steamy and dreamy Bebe Rexha on vocals. Wentz announced the new project in a cryptic blog entry on his web site back in June but, so far, the music has been coming out slowly with only a couple of tracks posted on the group's MySpace site and those being Electro Dance--quite a departure from the music of Fall Out Boy. Wentz has recently announced that things are going to start breaking quickly for Black Cards with their full length album debut due early in 2011. The "Santa Baby" diversion doesn't really sound like a Black Cards track. Sounds more like Bebe doing a bit of karaoke. But that's OK with me. I'm a sucker for a pretty girl. Adorable. Download using the above widget or at Bebe's Soundcloud page. Alizee is a French singer who became something of a sensation through Europe because of the whole Lolita thing; her introduction to the mass psyche occurred when she was just 15 and she officially entered the music world at 16. Alizee married in 2003--bummer--and took a lengthy hiatus before returning to singing in 2007. In spite of the Lolita sales angle, and Alizee's playing along with provocative outfits and poses, she led a rather squeaky-clean life through her teen years. On her second annual Christmas single, Alizee is joined by a few of her friends, about whom I know less than nothing. "Such A Special Time (It's Xmas Tonight)" can be downloaded for free. Head to the Soundcloud page or just download direct from megaupload. I love this woman. And every year Sofia Talvik releases a free Christmas song, so what's not to love? This year's effort is a fairly uptempo danceable indie track, even if the lyrics are the "I've been alone since we split up" type. It might be her catchiest yet. Hmm. I can't decide. Perhaps we need to compare "Santa" with her previous holiday efforts. Use the widget or head to Sofia's web site for "Santa", then head to Sofia's download page and pick up her Christmas singles from 2007, 2008, and 2009 (plus a couple of other tunes). By the way, this year's Christmas song is to benefit The Body Shop and ECPAT's world wide campaign to "Stop Sex Trafficking". And Sofia really likes it when you share on Facebook. How do you take tragedy and turn it into something not only positive, but bouncy and joyful? Pop singer Krysta Youngs has done just that. The infectious upbeat "Pink Christmas" was the musical aftermath of watching her mother fight and recover from breast cancer. In between, she wrote the much more heart wrenching "I'll Believe In You". But "Pink Christmas" is not only fun, it's got a message ("I want miracles on every street") and it's got a mission. You can get the download free from Krysta's web site, but only 25 actual hard copies of the song have been pressed. Beginning December 1, the copies will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the programs at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Stop by Krysta's MySpace page to learn more. The Rumbar Girls are a promotional gimmick, not a real group, although life does sometimes imitate art. STROH Rumbar is a spicy rum made in Austria for over 170 years. Lately, they've been intent upon conquering the UK rum market. Not sure if the employment of the Rumbar girls and their extended commercials/songs/videos is related to that or not, and this would probably annoy me if I lived in Europe. But, as a non-European, I have to admit to being tickled by this Disco Polka tune for the STROH winter campaign. "In The Snow" can be downloaded free at the Girls' web site. While you're there, you might as well pick up the summer hit "Feel The Spirit" as well. Stick around to read more about the trio, including their favorite Christmas songs or head over to their Facebook page and see what's shakin' there. Here's the video for those who'd rather not. |
