Not sure how I missed this one--it's been up since November 1--but it's not often a major Jazz legend like Wynton Marsalis offers up a free track like this. Of course, most Jazz fans bought the album when it came out last year. But just in case you didn't--or if you found yourself on the fence--take advantage of this opportunity. "Christmas Jazz Jam" was Marsalis' second Christmas set and he took an entirely different approach than he had on his first such album. His "Crescent City Christmas Card" was a much more spiritual and reverent piece whereas "Christmas Jazz Jam" was precisely that. "O Christmas Tree" is one of those songs Jazz artists love to tackle and rarely do they impress me. The best Jazz cover of that old chestnut remains, in my opinion, Vince Guaraldi's. Marsalis puts a New Orleans Second-Line spin on his "O Christmas Tree" and the results are impressive if not enough so to topple Guaraldi from the top of my Christmas Tree list. In any case, it's free at Bandcamp, and that's not something to be dismissed. Grab it while you can.

1. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 2. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas 3. Oh Holy Night Every year for a while now, Rickie Lee Jones has posted these three songs as a free download on her web site, her little holiday gift for fans. Since the first couple of years, though, she's limited the download window to just a few days. Last year, the songs were gone by December 27. Just FYI. This year, the songs are still free downloads. But if, like me, you have a preference for hard copy, they've now been pressed to CD as "Three Christmas Gems". Head to Rickie's web site and download your free Christmas cheer and/or buy the CD. Always nice to find something different, fresh and original. How bout some Hip Hop Gospel with Jazz. Outreach 24/7 is a Washington, DC based ensemble noted for being simultaneously laid back and funky. Here, Outreach 24/7 covers "The Christmas Song", gives the lyrics a religious makeover, and includes a couple of Jazz solos in the break, a little guitar spot from Eric Blake and a whirl on the keyboards from Tree Walters. Sweet! You can hear and download the song free on Reverbnation. 1. Jolly Old St. Nicholas 2. What Child Is This 3. Branch's Arms 4. Holy Winter 5. Auld Lang Syne 6. Silent Night From the video, you might conclude that Hilary Grist is in the same Indie Pop bag as Pomplamoose. But the pretty Canadian has a lot more depth and diversity. Sure, she can do Indie Pop, but she can also do Jazz and Folk and Folk Jazz and Indie Folk Jazz Pop. She can give you all that and more and, here, she seems to be doing it with just her voice and her keyboards. I'm a fan. I liked "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" well enough. But then came "What Child Is This" and I thought, "Hey, wait a second, there's something here." The original "Branch's Arms" could easily translate to most any genre, though it takes the Folk Jazz spin here. "Holy Winter" was enrapturing--absolutely spellbinding. And then, the coup de grace--Hilary makes "Auld Lang Syne" into something completely fresh and new--part hymnal, part torch song. I wouldn't have thought it was possibly to make that one sound fresh. The set closes with "Silent Night" but, to be honest, I was still focused on "Holy Winter" and "Auld Lang Syne". Truly an excellent little EP, which you can currently get free by going to Hilary's web site and clicking where it says "free download" (naturally enough). But, once you've got the EP, why don't you step inside and look around awhile. "It's Officially Winter Now" and you look like you could use some hot cocoa (OK, just trying to work in the album title. But it is a nice web site). 1. O Christmas Tree 2. We Three Kings 3. O Holy Night 4. Jingle Bells 5. O Come All Ye Faithful 6. Silent Night STUDIO HOUSE WEB SITE DOWNLOAD FREE THROUGH CD BABY From what I gather, Studio House is sort of a real world School Of Rock. Indeed, Paul Green, one of the masterminds of Studio House, was the founder of the original real life School Of Rock that inspired the Jack Black film of the same name. When that business had grown to 53 branches, Green sold his Rock School and began again with Studio House. Studio House proceeds from the premise that labels no longer invest in artist development, which was once a central part of their function. To counter this, Studio House will take an upcoming or established artist and grant that artist unlimited and free studio time. The students are part of this process from beginning to end. They learn by doing and the artists do what artists are supposed to do...create. "A Studio House Christmas", it seems, was a project by and about the students of Studio House. They were aided by Green, Claude Coleman Jr. (Ween, Amandala) and Elizabeth Ziff (Betty, The L Word), and joined by Kevin Calaba (Stars of Track and Field), who sings lead on "We Three Kings". I, personally, dug the jazzier numbers--"O Christmas Tree" (which has the Vince Guaraldi feel) and "O Come All Ye Faithful"--but your tastes may lead you to other tracks (there's rock and country here). And I'm sure we can all enjoy that it's Free. “There are so many things to treasure about Christmas, one of them being the music. I love how Christmas songs can create a moment and inspire an emotion that returns, year after year."--Jessie Kol As we featured on our PREviews page, young Indie Jazz artist Jessie Kol will be releasing a 4 song Christmas EP, "Little Emmanuel", later this month. In the meantime, she's decided to make this beautiful rendition of "In The Bleak Midwinter" available as a FREE download single through her own web site and through CD Baby. You'll find the sound to be very much in a Norah Jones vein, and that works just great on this Traditional Christmas carol. Stop by Jessie's new web site and get the song for the price of your email address. That's a bargain in my book. |
