STRANGE MANOR CHRISTMAS

The residents of Strange Manor are housemates, most of whom are San Francisco Bay area musicians and bandmates. And, every year, for some reason, they drop a little digital Christmas collection on an unsuspecting world. This is great fun rock stuff, mostly--re-imagined Christmas classics and the occasional original. We're highlighting "The Christmas Album Volume 5", here because, you know, it's the latest. But don't leave Strange Manor without your full compliment of Christmas presents. All 4 of the previous volumes are available for your insatiable elfin ears. Might even find yourself a Hanukkah track or two.

Overall, I dig these guys. Sort of a modern day Herman Apple, you've probably heard a lot of 11 Acorn Lane music in TV shows and movies without realizing it. The brilliant but canceled "Better Off Ted"? That was them. Their new CD, "Happy Holy Days" has better songs than the 3 they're giving you free ("Jingle Bells" is flat out awesome). But it should be enough to intrigue you to dig further.

Joanie Leeds is likely best known for her Children's music, though she has also done her share of what she calls "grown up gigs". There was even a nice folk album she recorded last year with Matthew Check which was suitable for all age groups. This year comes a quick little greeting for Christmakah; that's right, not just suitable for all ages but for multiple religions as well. It is more of a greeting than a song, but it's a fun greeting. And if you're a minute short on your mix disc, this could be just the thing. Visit Joanie's web site to learn and hear more. We're about midway through the Festival of Lights and this is our first free strictly Hanukkah entry (if you missed it, we did have a Hanukkah track from Mary Carves The Chicken early on). This album of remixes was put together by Tablet, an on-line magazine celebrating Jewish life and culture. They contacted the chosen people of another distinct and misunderstood culture--remixers--and asked them if they would be interested in deconstructing and reconstructing the music of Hanukkah (or, in the alternative, festive music of other Jewish celebrations). The response was an overwhelming "Hell, yeah!". The art of remixing is to take an original work and shape it into something completely new without destroying the integrity of the original. And, here, Tablet's Marc Weidenbaum has assembled some great ones, from the bouncy "Chanukah Chag Yafe" from ocp to the reverent ambient pop of "Maoz Tzur" from Mark Rushton. Buy none, get three FREE! Mary Carves The Chicken is a blues rockin' band from Southern California. They got together in the early 90s, rising out of the ashes of two other bands, the Tone Poets and Urban Circus. Their latest indie release, "Love and Respect", can be found on iTunes, eMusic and Napster and they're hard at work on another album as we speak. Like a lot of bands in this vein, MCTC is noted for their live performances. The trick, of course, is capturing that energy and sound within the grooves. In 2009, Mary Carves The Chicken produced a three song holiday EP and not only did they manage to capture their live fierceness and humor, they also pretty much covered all of the holidays of the season in economic fashion. This is a pretty solid set of holiday originals. Nobody's reinventing the wheel, here, but if you're down for some good old Rock & Roll and a touch of the Blues, this EP is well worth an add to your iPod shuffle.
