Our friends at Mistletunes uncovered this one, and we all owe them a great debt of gratitude for doing so. This is a straight up novelty record--the kind they don't seem to make much anymore. On some level, this Sci-Fi hoedown is intended as a children's record, but, like a Bugs Bunny cartoon, there's certainly enough here for adults to chew on and enjoy. "The Night The Hippies Hijacked Christmas" tells the story of a couple of good ol' boys who witness an invasion more frightening than aliens and Al Quaeda combined. Danged dirty hippies! The Amoeba People are favorites of the Dr. Dimento Show, for obvious reasons, and their Christmas "A" side has been featured on his program. But what about the "B" side, hmmm? Well, "Christmas Ferret" is no Hippie invasion, but it's quite a bit of fun, nonetheless. Pick this one up on Bandcamp, space cadets, then prepare to defend the 'Murken way of life.

Joanie Leeds is likely best known for her Children's music, though she has also done her share of what she calls "grown up gigs". There was even a nice folk album she recorded last year with Matthew Check which was suitable for all age groups. This year comes a quick little greeting for Christmakah; that's right, not just suitable for all ages but for multiple religions as well. It is more of a greeting than a song, but it's a fun greeting. And if you're a minute short on your mix disc, this could be just the thing. Visit Joanie's web site to learn and hear more. And download "Here Come The Holidays" free at Bandcamp. 1. O Christmas Tree 2. Puppy Love 3. The Friendly Beasts 4. Jingle Ka-Ching 5. Battling Kings 6. Silent Night 7. Christmas Sizzle Boy 8. It's About Love FREE FROM AMAZON MP3 Through the course of the season, Amazon, iTunes, and some of the other major digital retailers offer up loads of freebies. You can greatly expand your holiday library without spending a dime if you just pay attention. We won't be posting all of these--our goal is more to find the free stuff in lesser traveled corners of the Internets--but every once in a while we'll toss something up. This album of the popular VeggieTales characters is from 2005 and, right now, it's FREE over at Amazon MP3. I'm not a big fan of these sort of kiddie records, but then they weren't making these records for me. They make these records for the kids, and the kids love em. |
