Indie folk, here, in a style--at least on this song--that reminds me a bit of some of Dave Matthews' acoustic tracks. "Misplace My Holidays" is part of a collection of Yellowbirddd tracks, "Random & Rare", all of which can be downloaded free through Bandcamp. Or you can just take the Christmas song. Yellowbirddd is the project name for Boston artist Liam McCormack, currently based in Brooklyn. Visit his web site to learn more and visit Bandcamp for plenty of free Yellowbirddd music.

Minimalist Aussie singer Julian Pearce laid down his "New Year" as part of his free download album "Fall", released January 1, 2010. It's a track that features the classic Indie sound, which is at least something alternative to the House and Club tracks we've been finding. "New Year" is free at Bandcamp, and there's plenty more free music from Pearce there, including his latest release "runt! runt!" which shows a release date of January 1, 2011. It's so close to Christmas, I'm not sure how much I'll be posting tomorrow. Especially on the free page, which I'm guessing has become quite the draw (I mean, you're here aren't you?). So I'm leaving you tonight with some absolutely gorgeous stuff. This was one of the first Internet downloads I ever encountered. It was 2005 and, after listening to this one, I began to think there might be value to this Internet thing afterall, beyond just a good place for Fantasy Baseball. Pete Green is a young singer and guitar player from Sheffield, England. He started performing solo about 2002, put out his first solo record in 2007, put together a band soon thereafter and is currently singing with the Sweet Nothings (new name, same band)--record coming soon. Oh, and he's got a cat. So you know he's cool. "Everything's Dead Pretty When It Snows" was recorded in 2005 and it remains a popular Internet favorite in December. It's only a matter of time before the song works its way into full-on standard category. In my opinion, and for my Christmases, it's already there. You can still download the song freely from Pete's mostly abandoned Sparklemotion web site--he left it up so that you could. And there are other non-holiday downloads there as well, if you like what you hear. British Indie Rock band, with a couple of platinum albums already, did a live acoustic Christmas song within the last day or so; The Editors "Let It Snow" is good enough for them to give away and good enough for you to keep. Poughkeepsie Pop Punkers Far From Proper have released an acoustic Christmas single. "This Holiday" laments the passing of time and growing out of childhood at the same time it seeks to celebrate coming of age. It's a bitter-sweet tune that doesn't really reach a conclusion, story wise, as the singer ends pleading with his girl to spend the night. Will she or won't she? The song never says, which is likely the point. A very effective song, if not an especially "happy holiday" one. "This Holiday" can be downloaded free at PureVolume. 1. The Eyes, The Beard, The Nose, The Stomach, The Lungs 2. Is Christmas Time Just A Dream 3. To Get Away From Everything 4. Christmas Is A-Lookin' Good 5. Taste Like Candy 6. Christmas Song We told you about Indie Folker and his free album project way back when. Well, he's completed his set, titled it "Monsters In The Christmas Album" and you can download it free from now to January 15. What happens then, I don't know. I haven't had a chance to listen to this straight through, but I sampled a bit. I really dig whatever it is he has going on. Call it Folk, or Alt Folk, or Indie Folk, or Anti-Folk. All I know is he sounds to me a little like Bob Dylan and his approach to music is very much like I suspect Dylan's would have been had he been born in the 80s. Nobody writes like Dylan. Nobody. But I dig this kid's sound. I'd sign him to my label. If I had one. Overseas, it's the Advent Calendar, but, in this country, we like our Christmas in 12 day allotments. One of the best 12 Days of Christmas countdowns around is, without doubt, WXPN's. The Philly station annually gets the best local talent to write, record, and/or contribute holiday tuenage which they roll out, one by one, resulting in a pretty darned good collection in plenty of time for Christmas. Track one of 2010's "12 Days of XPN Local" is Adam Taylor's upbeat "Mrs. Mistletoe"--a really nice bit of Folk Pop you'd likely be happy to pay 99 cents for. But you doesn't has ta, cause it's free. We'll revisit the XPN collection when it's complete. Between now and then, you're on your own (unless we hit a really slow day around here). Go download "Mrs. Mistletoe" by Adam Taylor. And, if you've been very good this year, Santa might even let you download last year's goodies, including delights from Marah, The Swimmers, and Hoots & Hellmouth. Go on now. Get a move on. Time's a-wastin'. Something a little different, now, from A Great Big Pile Of Leaves. Recently on tour, the band did a whole lot of college radio. While at CFRE, they did some acoustic singing and playing, including one of their earlier numbers, "Drought Of Snow". Not strictly a Christmas song, of course, but it's little off beat performances like this that can help to make a Christmas mix-tape interesting enough to listen to after Christmas. The CFRE sessions are on line and waiting for your download. Or maybe you'd prefer to subscribe to the CFRE podcast at iTunes (also free). The original version of "Drought Of Snow", by the way, is on a 2008 EP, "The Firey Works II" You can download that for free, also, along with 11 of the 13 tracks on AGBPOL's latest, "Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex" at the official A Great Big Pile Of Leaves website. There's no release date listed for this one, but it's from last year. Blake Baggott is an Indie Christian acoustic artist who goes by the name As For Me. You'll find "Your Christmas Presence" available as a free download on PureVolume. Step back to the artist's profile page and you'll find plenty more free music. You can check him out on MySpace, too, where he bluntly informs you that "MySpace is dead!" As "influences", Blake cites Skittles. If you like "Your Christmas Presence", you might as well pick up Blake's cover of "Last Christmas", too, which he included as a PureVolume bonus track to the album "Maybe She Will See" (also from last year). It's free. |
