Our friends at Mistletunes uncovered this one, and we all owe them a great debt of gratitude for doing so. This is a straight up novelty record--the kind they don't seem to make much anymore. On some level, this Sci-Fi hoedown is intended as a children's record, but, like a Bugs Bunny cartoon, there's certainly enough here for adults to chew on and enjoy. "The Night The Hippies Hijacked Christmas" tells the story of a couple of good ol' boys who witness an invasion more frightening than aliens and Al Quaeda combined. Danged dirty hippies! The Amoeba People are favorites of the Dr. Dimento Show, for obvious reasons, and their Christmas "A" side has been featured on his program. But what about the "B" side, hmmm? Well, "Christmas Ferret" is no Hippie invasion, but it's quite a bit of fun, nonetheless. Pick this one up on Bandcamp, space cadets, then prepare to defend the 'Murken way of life.

Overall, I dig these guys. Sort of a modern day Herman Apple, you've probably heard a lot of 11 Acorn Lane music in TV shows and movies without realizing it. The brilliant but canceled "Better Off Ted"? That was them. Their new CD, "Happy Holy Days" has better songs than the 3 they're giving you free ("Jingle Bells" is flat out awesome). But it should be enough to intrigue you to dig further.

The King, for those who don't know, runs one of the top Christmas music sites around, the legendary FaLaLaLaLa. The Polkaholics hail from Chicago and their music is as much Punk as Polka. But, really, it's just all about having a good time. They pressed up about 500 of these as CDs, but those CDs will only be available as gifts to attendees of a December show in Chicago. For the rest of us, they've made the music available as a FREE download. One note of caution. These would not automatically download on my Mac. If you encounter similar difficulties, I can probably post the individual link codes in the comments section. OK? Anna One, Anna Two, Anna......... |
