Pop punkers The Dollyrots' current record is called "A Little Messed Up" and so they thought they could do a fun little holiday tie-in. So they asked their fans to send in the one thing they wanted for Christmas that was "a little messed up" and The Dollyrots would put the best of the messed into the lines of the song. They got quite a response, as it turns out. And some people, apparently, are pretty messed up. For Christmas. Anyway, "Messed Up Xmas" can be yours for the asking --no email address required. Just click the link on the band's MySpace blog. If you're actually looking for messed up gift ideas and you're having trouble keeping up, you'll find the lyrics there, too. The song rocks, but you already knew that from the video.

![]() ![]() ![]() Their sound has been labeled "moto-drone" by the people who label such things. On the band's facebook page, they call it "Repeat-o rock". To me, it kind of sounds like a grungy zombie indie rock band with some serious authentic country influence playing through blown out speakers on the moon, while the beat is provided by that old home organ your family owned in the 70s. Not that that's a bad thing. Got my attention for sure. Moon Duo is a pair from the Texas state of mind and they've just released a 7" holiday single which can be yours for $7 postage paid (in the US). "Silver Bells" is the "A" side and you can download that one free via Facebook or Reverbnation (bring your email addy). The "B" side sounds more interesting to me--a cover of The Rolling Stone's "Winter". ![]() 1. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas 2. Lil’ Saint Nick 3. Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas 4. Don’t Believe in Christmas STRANGE MANOR CHRISTMAS The residents of Strange Manor are housemates, most of whom are San Francisco Bay area musicians and bandmates. And, every year, for some reason, they drop a little digital Christmas collection on an unsuspecting world. This is great fun rock stuff, mostly--re-imagined Christmas classics and the occasional original. We're highlighting "The Christmas Album Volume 5", here because, you know, it's the latest. But don't leave Strange Manor without your full compliment of Christmas presents. All 4 of the previous volumes are available for your insatiable elfin ears. Might even find yourself a Hanukkah track or two. ![]() Some good stuff coming out just about now. This Indip Pop band from Wales (although none of the members are actually Welsh), Los Campesinos! have been making music since 2006, but I believe this is their first entry into the Christmas genre. And a nice little poppish Alt Rock track it is. And free! The band released this at about the same time they were announcing the details of their new Heat Rash subscription package, which will feature exclusive mp3s not available anywhere else, 7" singles, first shot at new releases, and concert tickets without booking fees. Plus, those who sign up before December 20th will get an additional Christmas song, "The Holly And The Ivy". Full details here. To download "Kindle A Flame In Her Heart", click on the downward arrow above (you've got the hang of Soundcloud by now, right?). ![]() Recently, Ego Likeness underwent a crisis with which I can all too easily identify; their dear Sophie kat suffered sudden heart failure. Although Sophie was saved (my child was not so fortunate), the bills for the life saving procedure were extensive. The darkwave couple from Maryland sold some art on eBay, but there was quite an outpouring of support from their fans and the Internet community. As a bit of a thank you, they've released a collection of 3 rare tracks for free download via their web site, topping the treat off with their annual holiday posting of "If The Fates Allow", which seemed especially appropriate this year. "If The Fates Allow" dates back at least to 2004, if not earlier, but I admit this is (I think) the first time I've encountered it. It's the Ego Likeness vision of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (in fact, that's how the mp3 is tagged) and it's really quite moving, I think. ![]() 1. Super Desserts - Children Go 2. If you're a big enough Christmas music fan to be cruising these pages, you owe it to yourself to check SOC out. I know nothing about Paste Magazine, but here they've collected up some of what everybody seems to agree are the best Christmas tracks being offered freely by the artists this year, plus maybe one or two that Paste seems to have the exclusive on (like the Yule Logs track). They even point the way to a freebie we hadn't yet found--Civil War's "Tracks In The Snow" digital single, featuring "O Come O Come Emmanuel" on the flipside (You can get that one just below). This is a Holiday Sampler everyone should enjoy, especially as its free. ![]() 1. Duke Robillard - Duke's Christmas 2. Sara Petite - Souvenirs 3. Scott Miller - Yes, Virginia 4. ![]() 1. Another November At The Doctors 2. A Mirror At Christmas A bit of experimental fun for your Tuesday. I suppose "A Mirror At Christmas" fits in the Alt Folk category, though there's a rock lean. And a bit of a message about self examination (or at least that's what I got out of it; might've gotten something more if I hadn't been looking at my naval). Not sure what to make of "Another November At The Doctors"--1:13 of very peaceful electronic wind chime music. Interesting. I'll have to revisit. Anyway, it's free from Drunken Boat at Bandcamp. ![]() Max Bemis of Say Anything and Sherri DuPree Bemis of Eisley (presumably, Truly is the dog), have cut a couple of raw garage band tracks for their fans. "White Christmas" was the intended target of the Texas twosome, but Sherri says that, while they were recording Irving Berlin's classic, she became inspired to write a more Brothers Grimm/Tim Burton take. And thus was born "White Christmas Nightmare". Links for the free downloads can be found on Sherri's Twitter feed. ![]() "Silent Night" is Sweet Jane's contribution to the Reekus Christmas Compilation, available from Reekus Records for € 6.50. The Irish label's comp is a charity effort, with proceeds going to benefit The Simon Community and Glensillagh Animal Rescue. Sweet Jane give the song a nice fresh sound without straying from the original melody. One of the nicer versions I've heard in a while. The track originally appeared on "An Indiecater Christmas 2009". To download, click on the downward arrow, then click on "download".
