Frog Stand is a tiny label with all of three artists on its roster, but ostensibly the label of Clare and The Reasons, the Brooklyn based Indie Chamber Pop band. Last year, Frog Stand issued a free digital Christmas EP featuring one track from each of the artists in the house (this year, that digital EP--plus the new song--is being offered free with any purchase from the Frog Stand store; but you could probably still find it free on the Net without a whole lot of effort). This year, Clare decided to cut a new holiday song, adding Wham's "Last Christmas" to the Frog Stand discography. There are more versions of "Last Christmas" out there than you could conceivably find sticks to shake at them. But this cover is different for two reasons (no pun intended). One: Clare makes this look gooood! Two: This version of "Last Christmas" features Ella "Tha Cat" Fitzgerald--you'll hear her, I promise--and that is something that simply cannot be ignored on this site. As renditions of "Last Christmas" go, this was a pretty good one. Find it at Frog Stand. Thanks to The Late Greats Music Blog for this tip (and for the picture of Ella).

A nice tip, here, from our friends at Mistletunes--still the best spot on the Webs when it comes to new Christmas music that rocks and rolls. The Ruffled Feathers are from Vancouver and their free Christmas song is "The Highest Mountain", a spritely bit of indie Chamber Pop that captured me in its web of charm. I love the instrumentation --ukelele, clarinet, trumpet, banjo, bells, french horn, piano, percussion. You don't hear a lot of Indie records with that mix. You just don't. And then there are Gina Loes' vocals that I tried to resist, but just couldn't. Sigh. But really, for me, it's about the cat on the cover art, there. And once he/she got mentioned in the song--okay, maybe I heard it wrong, but it sure sounded like "trying to buy my ticket back/so I can see my cat"--well, it was all over for me, as you can imagine. Your mileage may vary, but I suggest you pick this one up before the cat demands royalties for the appearance and the song disappears. You'll find it here. |
The FREE ListHere we hope to direct you to some of the Christmas music on the web that can be yours absolutely free. We will not direct you to mp3 or sharity sites, here, but only to artist sites, label sites, and other authorized and unquestionably legal locations. ArchivesDecember 22-31, 2010 Categories
