The Rend Collective Experiment is a loose conglomeration of Irish Contemporary Christian musicians--15, more or less--whose music is described as "organic". They describe the group as more of a movement than a band. And their goal is to bring modern culture and music together with their faith. Of late, the Collective seems fascinated with the idea of recording music using iPhones. It's crazy. So crazy it just might work. Check out "O Come All Ye Faithful", RCE's latest. Hard to tell it was an iPhone recording. The band can rock, too, as the song that plays when you hit the web site ("Faithful") more than demonstrates. And they've sold more than a few records since embarking on their quest in 2004. To get a free download of "O Come All Ye Faithful", simply drop your name and email addy at the Collective's web site.

Philmont is a Pop Punk band out of Charlotte, NC where, trust me, it does snow. These guys were signed to EMI's Contemporary Christian label up until earlier this year. Now they find themselves an Indie act in transition. "It Never Snows (In Charlotte)" has a good rock sound, reminiscent of Relient K, though the song's not especially Christmasy. You can find this one at Philmont's iLike page (What? No Bandcamp?). The Contemporary Christian singer from Australia has a free Christmas song download available at her web site. Charmaine wowed CCM circles this year with the album "Love Reality", her first full album in 8 years it appears. The Christmas song is "Angels We Have Heard On High" and you'll have to trade your email and zip code. Get all the details (and the song) at Charmaine's web site. 1. A Good Night 2. I Celebrate The Day 3. Merry Christmas 4. O Holy Night 5. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree 6. Silver Christmas I can't find out anything about this guy, thanks in large part to the rather large number of artists named Billy Thompson. I'm pretty sure this Billy Thompson isn't the Blues guitarist, or the R&B singer, or the violinbilly artist, or even the progressive indie band from the UK (with a female vocalist; not sure if she's actually "Billy"). But this Billy Thompson posted a link to his free Christmas EP on a music forum, so I downloaded it. And I liked it. Fairly typical Indie sound, but well executed and an interesting song selection including one original, "A Good Night". Billy sounds great on the Reliant K cover and the title track and I dug the medley of "Silver Bells" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". I do wish he'd left "O Holy Night" alone, though. Anyway, whomever this Billy Thompson turns out to be, you can download "A Good Night" free through Filedropper. Just click on the gray button that says "Download This File". Don't hit the big blue button with the big green arrow. I don't know what happens, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be good. A Contemporary Christian artist from--wait for it--Celebration, Florida, John Mandeville delivered a really nice original tune for the Christmas season last year. Mandeville is a Dove Award winning writer and singer. I bopped over to Facebook to check out a few of his songs, found myself digging on "Glorify" very much, then learned that that was his big hit debut single in 2009 (following years collecting gold records writing songs for other people). God's honest truth, I have no idea where you can get or buy or even hear "A Christmas Prayer", John's 2010 holiday single. But you can get 2009's effort "Christmas Is You" as a free download from either John Mandeville's "Christmas Prayer" page or from ReverbNation. Or just enter your email in the widget above. I could've sworn we highlighted this one before, but it turns out I only mentioned in passing. "Christmas Time" by Root Road is one of the great pop Christmas songs of the year. I've been playing it over and over and only tonight did I look to see who was doing it. This one's free through Noisetrade, Facebook, or Reverbnation. The band just wants your email addy. "Christmas Time" is upbeat and positive and full of Christmas cheer. So go wherever you have to go, but get this terrific pop Christmas song. It'll bring a smile to your face, I'm bettin', like it did to mine. 1. O Come All Ye Faithful 2. What Child Is This? 3. O Come O Come Emmanuel 4. Silent Night 5. O Holy Night 6. Go Tell It On The Mountain 7. We Three Kings 8. Little Drummer Boy 9. The Christmas Song Daniel DeWitt writes that Winston Audio has pretty much ceased to exist. Having decided to spend more time with his family and to get a "real" job to support them, the other members of the band have moved on to other projects. But music is still in Daniel's blood. So he's decided to record music that is true to his faith and that his family and friends will like. In that spirit, he offers this Christmas album as his first project on the new path he's determined. "DeWinter Wonderland" is a nice piece of work, too. Working with the classic songs and their existing melodies, DeWitt layers an undercurrent of Indie Rock with some truly spectacular results. I was very much enjoying the album anyway, after "O Come All Ye Faithful", but the work on "O Come O Come Emmanuel" blew me away. He shines on a straight forward "O Holy Night". "Go Tell It On The Mountain" gets a bit of a Country shine, but features touches of New Orleans styled Gospel as well. Daniel's version of "We Three Kings" didn't do much for me, but "Little Drummer Boy" was hypnotically enchanting Indie Rock. And "The Christmas Song", with its layered harmony vocals, sounds to me like Paul McCartney meets The Free Design. You know these songs well, but Daniel puts himself into them revealing new textures and possibilities. If this is the path Daniel has set for himself, I applaud him and hope it brings him and his family many blessings. Daniel plans an album in the coming year and has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funding for it. "DeWinter Wonderland" can be downloaded free here. 1. Welcome Christmas 2. It's Christmas Day (Love Is Here) 3. We Three Kings 4. You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch 5. Snowglobe 6. Come Thou Long Expected Jesus (featuring Rachel Gray) 7. O Come O Come Emmanuel 8. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) 9. Go Man! 10. White Christmas Free? Sure! The Winter Failure is an Indie Christian band from Titusville, Florida. They pressed up a small batch of these to give away at shows, but they're more than happy to make "Advent? Sure!" available for free for anyone who's interested. To be honest, I nearly bailed on the whole thing with "Welcome Christmas", but it got much better after that. I very much liked "It's Christmas Day", "Snowglobe" and "Go Man". And a certain segment of the Indie and Christian fan base is going to like their takes on the rest. Visit the band on Facebook and download the album, with their compliments, at Mediafire. The band will have a full-length CD in 2011. There's no release date listed for this one, but it's from last year. Blake Baggott is an Indie Christian acoustic artist who goes by the name As For Me. You'll find "Your Christmas Presence" available as a free download on PureVolume. Step back to the artist's profile page and you'll find plenty more free music. You can check him out on MySpace, too, where he bluntly informs you that "MySpace is dead!" As "influences", Blake cites Skittles. If you like "Your Christmas Presence", you might as well pick up Blake's cover of "Last Christmas", too, which he included as a PureVolume bonus track to the album "Maybe She Will See" (also from last year). It's free. Josiah James has been growing up in the music business. He cut his first indie sides at the age of 14, put out his first full-length CD at 16, started touring extensively shortly thereafter. He's been turning out records ever since. Still a youngster, Josiah's got a lot of experience in the bank, now, and it shows. Josiah's new Christmas song is a perfect Contemporary Christian Folk/Rock track, showing off both Josiah's songwriting and his guitar playing skills. To pick up "Heaven Came Down" for free, head over to Josiah's web site and click on the mailbox on the right. This is another email-for-song deal. Or, if you just want to listen to the song, you'll find it in the player just above the mailbox. |
