Indie folk, here, in a style--at least on this song--that reminds me a bit of some of Dave Matthews' acoustic tracks. "Misplace My Holidays" is part of a collection of Yellowbirddd tracks, "Random & Rare", all of which can be downloaded free through Bandcamp. Or you can just take the Christmas song. Yellowbirddd is the project name for Boston artist Liam McCormack, currently based in Brooklyn. Visit his web site to learn more and visit Bandcamp for plenty of free Yellowbirddd music.

Minimalist Aussie singer Julian Pearce laid down his "New Year" as part of his free download album "Fall", released January 1, 2010. It's a track that features the classic Indie sound, which is at least something alternative to the House and Club tracks we've been finding. "New Year" is free at Bandcamp, and there's plenty more free music from Pearce there, including his latest release "runt! runt!" which shows a release date of January 1, 2011. The project of LA based Vance Kotrla, Sci-Fi Romance specializes in Indie Alt Folk with just a hint of punk--enough to classify this one as "steampunk" or "steamfolk". This version of "Auld Lang Syne" starts out in the traditional tempo before, pardon me, picking up steam. The song then chugs it's way to an uptempo finish as a punkish folk number. As the artist notes, "Auld Lang Syne" is pretty much an inevitable holiday tune and there are no shortage of versions available. Given the explosion of folk and Americana this year, this one is certainly worth a listen. And the download is free through Bandcamp. The little I can learn about FFGreen says he is (they are?) an experimental electronic indie hip hop artist from Athens, Georgia. This little minute-and-a-half version of "Auld Lang Syne" is decent enough, if not earth-shatteringly new and different. The zip comes with two remixes, the first of which is kind of fun. And the whole package is free through Bandcamp. While you're there, you might as well pick up "Jingle Bells" free as well. FYI, these are instant downloads--no email address required--though they may take a bit to load. Had to find a free New Year's Eve song or two. This one's a 2009 track from the self-titled Sentient Machine download album. Sentient Machine are an Industrial Rock band out of New York, but here they toss in a bit of funk and the result is an oddly enjoyable jam that reminds me of some of those late 80s 12" dance-mixed Rock records. So if you already picked up the single "James Brown Died On Christmas Day" from Hands & Knees, might as well complete the theme with "James Brown New Year's Eve Bash", right? This is free at Bandcamp and the entire album is a "name your price" download. Numero6 is a post punk band from Italy. And their holiday spirit has led them to offer their contribution to the season free, for a limited time. In spite of the title, "The Christmas Song" is actually a heavy rock reworking of "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)". This is an instant download at Bandcamp; no email address required. If you see something that suggests payment in Euros, click on the song title. It should come up as a free download at that point. Come On! Let's Boogey To The Elf Dance! (2007) Blue Christmas (2008) Pregnant Bride (2009) Inspired by the prolific Sufjan Stevens, San Diego's Longstay began recording EP's of Christmas music for family and friends beginning in 2007. This year, they shared a track from each through their web site, posting one a day with "Pregnant Bride" being shared on Christmas Day with the promise "More gifts to come still..." From the 2010 edition, you can listen to (but apparently not download) "Come Thy Fount Of Every Blessing". Perhaps that's what's still to come. You'll find that one here. The rest, you'll find here. Just click on the artwork to download the songs. Another concluded set, this one an Advent Calendar--so 24 days of goodies to explore. I don't speak Norwegian, so download first and figure it all out later. In England, Australia, Canada and some other countries, the 26th is "Boxing Day". While experts may differ on the origins of "Boxing Day", I've always understood it (from afar) as a day of boxing up extra food and unwanted presents to give to those less fortunate. My sense of the thing comes more from the song "Good King Wenceslas" than any actual experience or knowledge, but that makes sense to me. Like everything else, Boxing Day is more of a bank holiday these days than anything else (which means it'll be celebrated on the 27th this year). So I see not the slightest disrespect in using this holiday as a way of dropping a lot of free download links we've accumulated that, for one reason or another, I haven't gotten around to writing up. These are all free and legal. Some of these links will take you to mediafire and like spots, but I've tracked them back and they're all artist approved. Some are new, some are from last year. Some are good, some are bad. Many I owe to the multitude of great Christmas web sites in our blog roll. Yule have to investigate yourself. But better I should give you the chance to do so while the links are still valid than wait so long that they've gone away. I've got a couple of collections I still hope to talk about in some depth and we'll continue bringing you the free and legal free stuff as we find it--even in June or July. Lazy Monsters – JingleBells Not long ago, we posted a package of remixes from Atlas Sound (Bradford Cox of Deerhunter). He had said the remixes were of a song he'd recorded for a seasonal compilation his roommate was working on. And here is that compilation, "Roam For The Holidaze 2". A quick sampling reveals a lot of lo-fi indie rock, shoegaze, experimental. For my tastes, the Atlas Sound track is easily the highlight, though I can certainly think of possibilities for Jack Hines' "Happy Holidays" and I know people who will like "Am I Fit To Own Your Puppets For Christmas" and "Jingle Bells". Not enough for you? Well, you'll note the title is "Roam For The Holidaze 2" which implies a "1", does it not? Yes it do, and you can download Volume 1 here--17 more tracks of Indie weirdness or goodness, depending on your point of view. Download the 2010 collection at Coco Art. |
