It seems like only yesterday we were telling you about the great new holiday single from Eyes Lips Eyes. Hmm. Might that be because it was only yesterday? Yeah, well, anyway, the band that originated in Utah routinely returns to their birthplace, especially for the big "EVE" celebration in Salt Lake City. Additionally, Eyes Lips Eyes lent their Christmas song to this Velour Family Holiday Compilation, a free download of some of Utah's best bands and the Christmas songs they love. There's a full range on this one, from the Hip Hop Rock of Chance Lewis and Apt to Alt Folk, Indie Pop, a soulful "God Rest Ye", a plaintive "We Three Kings" done at a funereal tempo. "This Christmas", by the way, isn't the Donny Hathaway track. And I guess that SNL song is going to stick, huh? Always wanted a local artist compilation from Utah. Seriously. Now I've got one. Eyes Lips Eyes used to be known as Elizabethan Report. And the Californian band was originally based in Utah. Details, details. What matters is the music and Eyes Lips Eyes does it good. They've basically taken the New Wave sound of the 80s and made it new and they've taken the Indie sound of today and given it a mainstream makeover. What you'll hear in "Slept In Through Christmas" is highly accessible pop rock with a catchy beat and good energy. It's not the most Christmasy of Christmas songs, but its fresh and original. And, anyway, I'm happy to have stumbled across Eyes Lips Eyes for my future non-holiday listening pleasure. Oh, and I love the video. British Indie Rock band, with a couple of platinum albums already, did a live acoustic Christmas song within the last day or so; The Editors "Let It Snow" is good enough for them to give away and good enough for you to keep.

I'm in the middle of a bit of a project with a whole lot of deadline, so the day's free pickins might not be as long a list as usual. S'OK. Good chance for everybody to catch their breath. Especially me.

I do believe I'm among the first to feature the free holiday single from this Iowa band. Golden Veins has been compared to New Order and Joy Division. I'd say there's a whole lot of electronica, a good new wave pop melody, but a bit of a grunge-like sound and attitude as well. Interesting mix. Hypnotic even. Strangely Christmasy, too. But the song is free, so just download "Merry Christmas (Don't Forget To Write)" and decide for yourself.
