The band Parlovr is known for "sloppy pop", whatever the heck that is. Is that really a genre? I gather it's sort of a chaotic take on Power Pop. Judging from the write-ups, you never really know what this band is going to do or sound like. They start off with perfectly constructed pop/rock songs and then just kind of......go off. So they might be punk one night, or power pop, or D.I.Y., or....I swear I even heard a little Industrial in there. In any case, they've got a two song digital single that you can name your donation for. Donation? Yeah, all proceeds are going to AVAAZ, a non-profit dedicated to trying to narrow the gap between the world we have and the world we want. Good luck with that. The songs are oddly mesmerizing. "I'm Santa" sounds a bit like Lo-Fi Wombats music while "Spike The Eggnog" (which unfortunately for the kiddies contains some profanity) is a remarkable and spellbinding Biz Markie meets the orphans from Annie concoction that works incredibly well--much better than it should, yo. Hats off to these Montreal dudes for whatever it is this is. It's good. Download it direct from Parlovr. Don't forget to give generously for a better world. Ah, who am I kidding? Enter "0" and have at it.

We've Got Diggin' Out To Do......You, Me, And Everyone We Know Okay. How to do this. Hmm. See, only about half this collection is free at the moment, the rest just streams. Still, it was a great opportunity to get rid of a few bookmarked items, now that they're collected in the same place. OK, the free stuff will be bold and linked to the collection page. You got a better idea? Even streaming, this is a nice collection of Rock, Pop, Pop Punk, Power Pop and Indie Rock. My favorite, sadly, is not available for free download (yet). That would be You, Me And Everyone We Know's "We've Got Diggin' Out To Do". It's all pretty good, though. Among the freebies, my favorite would be "O Christmas Tree" from The Orphan & The Poet. Anyway, choose your own favorites at PureVolume and download whatever they'll let you download. Pop punkers The Dollyrots' current record is called "A Little Messed Up" and so they thought they could do a fun little holiday tie-in. So they asked their fans to send in the one thing they wanted for Christmas that was "a little messed up" and The Dollyrots would put the best of the messed into the lines of the song. They got quite a response, as it turns out. And some people, apparently, are pretty messed up. For Christmas. Anyway, "Messed Up Xmas" can be yours for the asking --no email address required. Just click the link on the band's MySpace blog. If you're actually looking for messed up gift ideas and you're having trouble keeping up, you'll find the lyrics there, too. The song rocks, but you already knew that from the video.

Don’t Believe in Christmas STRANGE MANOR CHRISTMAS The residents of Strange Manor are housemates, most of whom are San Francisco Bay area musicians and bandmates. And, every year, for some reason, they drop a little digital Christmas collection on an unsuspecting world. This is great fun rock stuff, mostly--re-imagined Christmas classics and the occasional original. We're highlighting "The Christmas Album Volume 5", here because, you know, it's the latest. But don't leave Strange Manor without your full compliment of Christmas presents. All 4 of the previous volumes are available for your insatiable elfin ears. Might even find yourself a Hanukkah track or two. Some Pop Punk for y'all? There are times when you really want to hear traditional Christmas music--Bing, Perry, Andy--but there are definitely times you want to get as far from that as you can. Just crank the stereo and rock on, dude. For the latter, you'll find "That Time Of Year Again" a perfect play. Sort of in the vein of MxPx, I think. Stick Around call Ireland home, Galway to be precise. Bandcamp is where the Christmas song is housed. If you like the "That Time Of Year Again", check out "When We Ran" which I believe is also a free download. Coo-el! And, in your spare time, look up Stick Around on MySpace. Yep, they're there. |
The FREE ListHere we hope to direct you to some of the Christmas music on the web that can be yours absolutely free. We will not direct you to mp3 or sharity sites, here, but only to artist sites, label sites, and other authorized and unquestionably legal locations. ArchivesDecember 22-31, 2010 Categories
