I'm in the middle of a bit of a project with a whole lot of deadline, so the day's free pickins might not be as long a list as usual. S'OK. Good chance for everybody to catch their breath. Especially me.

I do believe I'm among the first to feature the free holiday single from this Iowa band. Golden Veins has been compared to New Order and Joy Division. I'd say there's a whole lot of electronica, a good new wave pop melody, but a bit of a grunge-like sound and attitude as well. Interesting mix. Hypnotic even. Strangely Christmasy, too. But the song is free, so just download "Merry Christmas (Don't Forget To Write)" and decide for yourself.

Yesterday, the Internet was broken (my provider couldn't handle Cyber Monday) and today, I'm really really really busy. But the free stuff is still falling like rain. I'll try to post some more tonight, but I thought it worth stopping to share the new mix of "A Merry Christmas With You" from The Sexy Accident. The song was originally released on the album "Mantoloking" in the summer of 2009. Last Christmas, they did a special holiday mix and this year, there's a third mix. In the first two versions, the band reversed the sexes. In this version, all 3 characters are female. Deal with it. All three versions were mixed and produced by Seattle's legendary Steve Fisk. And all three can be yours free by visiting The Sexy Accident on Bandcamp.

SECRET SECRET DINO CLUB - SNOW BUDDIES

Proving once again that cover art matters, I immediately stopped to download this two track single at PureVolume specifically because of the cool looking cover. Secret Secret Dino Club hail from Sarasota Springs, New York and "Snow Buddies" features "Cool Guy Doing Christmas Stuff" and "Woah Christmas Tree". The band's profile page describes them as Hip Hop, but this single sounds sort of Grunge to me. Or Post-Grunge. This was released last year by Drive-Thru records, who have a fairly decent track record for this sort of thing. The rest of Dino Club's stuff appears to be independently released. And I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing a highlight of their career might have been the song "I'm Taking Your Girlfriend And There's Nothing You Can Do About It".

Earlier, in one of our Singles reports on the Home page, we told you about this upcoming single from the Mynabirds, who describe their sound as Neil Young meets Motown. The folks at Saddle Creek are making this Christmas single available as a Free download (in exchange for your email address, of course). You can always unsubscribe later. Saddle Creek is exclusively selling "All I Want Is Truth (For Christmas)" on white vinyl. The Saddle Creek white vinyl single is limited to 200, so head over there quickly if you're interested.

VIV ALBERTINE - WHEN IT WAS NICE

One time lead guitarist for the ground-breaking all-female Punk Rock band The Slits, Viv Albertine dropped off the music landscape entirely for about 25 years. But when Zoe Street Howe's biography of the band was published, Viv got the old bug again. "The songs," she says, "came pouring out." She recorded several songs last year, some of which eventually emerged on this year's "Flesh" EP, and also managed to collaborate with Braindead Collective on this Christmas song. "When It Was Nice" is an Experimental Post-Grunge track with lyrics about connecting to childhood memories. The song was, and is, available as a FREE download from Viv's site.

Viv Albertine had been thinking about doing another Christmas song this year. However, the sudden death in October of Ari Up, lead vocalist for The Slits, may serve to push such thoughts aside for the time being.
