Julian Wolfreys is a Professor of English, an author, a poet, a musician, a singer and songwriter. Let's see, after my days of macaroni art, I, um, uh, um...I did this Christmas music blog thing once.
Wolfreys used to play with a group called The Nightwatchmen, an avant grade progressive Ambient Psych Folk Chamber Pop collective. They're really quite fascinating, judging from "The Intelligence of Crows", which Julian now hosts on his Bandcamp site. But the group disbanded in late 2016. He's also done some Jazz with Old Time Hockey. And what you see on Bandcamp is but the tip of the iceberg as there are more than 50 recordings that are exclusively available to VIP members. Did I mention my macaroni art? I did?
But we're here to talk about Christmas music and, here, specifically "Solstice Songs (Three Ships)". There are 35 instrumental tracks here, mostly acoustic solo guitar. Ambient soundscapes. And, while the most beautiful and winning are the old carols, it is fascinating to hear what a skilled guitarist can do with Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You". There are also French and Polish carols that might be unfamiliar to you, but which have wonderful melodies.
As we draw closer to Christmas, Julian Wolfreys' "Solstice Songs (Three Ships)" is precisely the kind of peaceful, meditative soundtrack I enjoy listening to, as either foreground or background. Judge for yourself. It's name your price at Bandcamp.
