Continuing with the Funk theme, here's a Chicago multi-instrumentalist songwriting producer Devin Wessels with some mostly brief and slappin' beats. "A Very Funkdapus Christmas" does feature two full song length tracks..."Santa Claus Sure Got Soul" and a reworked-with-a-beat "Christmas Time Is Here". Just so you know, not that you can't figure it out on your own, "Caroling 1" is "This Christmas" and "Caroling 2" is "What Christmas Means To Me". But "Santa Claus Sure Got Soul" and "Jingle Bells" are probably my favorites, though the "Elf Song" gets pretty Jazzy once the elves stop singing. It can all be yours for as much as you wish to pay via Bandcamp.

Music from the Scottish Indie Underground! A couple months back, we shared with you some of the annual Christmas singles from The Bird And The Monkey, the Experimentalist duo, Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian (Swan & Simian, get it? The Bird and The Monkey). Just what we needed--more monkey business. What I think I was unaware of is that these annual singles were done for Acacia Radio's annual holiday show, "We Wish You A Metal Christmas and an Indie New Year". Celebrating half a decade of Indie Underground festivities, Sparks From The Mothership has released this collection, "Christmas On Acacia: A BirdMonkey MixTape". It features all of the tracks we featured before from The Bird And The Monkey, plus their "Christmas On Acacia" Theme and a Bird & Monkey holiday ID (which is really cool; oh, so's the theme...a nice little Indie Pop lead-in for your holiday headtape). In addition to all of the Christmas chaos from The Bird And The Monkey, the mixtape includes two tracks from Dawn of the Replicants, one from The Stark Palace, and a comedic piece from Mr Twonkey, Paul Vickers & The Leg. The highlights are the show pieces from The Bird And The Monkey and their "Come Home (For Christmas)". But ranking right up there are "No Room At The Inn" from Dawn of the Replicants and "Saw What Your Momma Did" by The Stark Palace. And it's all name-your-price at Bandcamp.
So you say you're feeling down because the new Sloan Christmas single sold out before you could get one? Is that what's troubling you, bunky? Well lift your head up high and know that you can get a digital download of at least one side of the single for free. "The Noisetrade 2016 Holiday Mixtape" has arrived and, right off the bat, they hit a home run by having Sloan's "Kids Come Home At Christmas". The collection has lots of other good Christmas music, too. Old favorites like Sleeping At Last, Andrew Belle and Sugar & The Hi-Lows are joined by artists you may be less familiar with like Saintsenaca, Old Sea Brigade, and Trelia. There's even a nod to the Festival of Lights as the LeeVees classic "How Do You Spell Channukkahh" is included. Sure, the star, here, is Sloan. But there are no loser tracks and it's all free. After a quick sample, I'd say it's well worth your while to check out Trelia and Benjamin James. One thing of note. The collection does not appear to be streamable, so you're going to have to download it to hear it. But that's not a great inconvenience, being as it is a free gifty. Hey, look, I don't know why I like the music I like when I like it. What I know is that, after listening to about 2 hours of crap that almost made me hate the holidays, this one made me smile (for assorted reasons). And I know that if the trend of our last couple of freebies continues, I'm going to have to put an R-rating on this blog. I'd never heard of Cali Miles. She is apparently a model who posts racy pictures to Instagram and a singer of Pop Dance and EDM. She was also recently charged in connection with a drug ring in her native Ohio. But I'm not in the judgement business. Somehow, I think she'll get some kind of community service anyway (though, if she goes to prison, the selfies could be interesting). There's nothing explicit in the song or video (though plenty of suggestion). I'd say its tamer than your average Victoria's Secret TV special or commercial. Jemini is cool (depending on where you are on the web, there are 3 different spellings of his handle) and "Naughty X-Mas" has a good beat...you can dance to it. And, hey, its free. The tune dates to 2013 and is part of a free Cali Miles mixtape, "Glitterverse". You can download the whole thing or just the Christmas tune at Club Tapes. |
