Seth Fickett was determined to write an upbeat and cheerful holiday song this Christmas. So what did he end up doing? He wrote really sad lyrics to "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"...which, it should be pointed out, is already a sad song. "I Don't Want A Melancholy Christmas" is possibly the most depressing Christmas song I've heard since "Depressed Christmas" by Culturecide. Play the songs back-to-back and smile as both Bing Crosby and Judy Garland roll over in their respective graves.
Somehow, I'd guess that Seth was smiling as he sang this. "Through the years, I've grown a little bitter." And the uke playing is really quite pretty (as are the backing musicians). I dunno. Earlier, my friend Jim from Christmas Underground was complaining about all the covers of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (personally, I think it's "Christmas Time Is Here" that's being overdone this year). Maybe he'll appreciate this ode to depression re-write. You'll find Seth Fickett's "I Don't Want A Melancholy Christmas" on Noisetrade.
