Continuing with the Funk theme, here's a Chicago multi-instrumentalist songwriting producer Devin Wessels with some mostly brief and slappin' beats. "A Very Funkdapus Christmas" does feature two full song length tracks..."Santa Claus Sure Got Soul" and a reworked-with-a-beat "Christmas Time Is Here". Just so you know, not that you can't figure it out on your own, "Caroling 1" is "This Christmas" and "Caroling 2" is "What Christmas Means To Me". But "Santa Claus Sure Got Soul" and "Jingle Bells" are probably my favorites, though the "Elf Song" gets pretty Jazzy once the elves stop singing. It can all be yours for as much as you wish to pay via Bandcamp.

What the Phunk? Phunk Sinatra is the performance name of... Well, he doesn't really say. But, the little thing in the upper right-hard corner says Athens, Greece. So you got that going for you, which is nice. "Phunky Phunky Christmas" features four festive funked up remixes of classic Soul tunes. Mostly, he's pumped them up a little bit. But, hey, can always use some extra Funk around the holidays, right? Catch the whole Phunk Sinatra package on Bandcamp.
Analog Monarch's "Christmas Jam" is a Funk Jazz version of "Sleigh Ride"...though this entry looks like something he might add to later. It's a cool enough little trip from the Canadian Synth Keyboard artist and, if you like it, you can always check out his full Christmas album from last year, "Truth". That one's not free, but Analog Monarch does a mean "Jingle Bells". "Christmas Jam" is name your price at Bandcamp.
Hey, look, we found a song for Hanukkah. We've been looking high and low and we found one. And it's free; no gelt required.
You may not know the name Lenny Beige (aka Steven Furst) but, boy, they know him in England. A comedian, actor, writer, and founder of magazines and comedy and night clubs in the UK, Beige has starred on the stage, the radio, and the telly. The man gets more laughs with his toupee than many comedians can get with their best material. He's been called "Britain's one-man Rat Pack" and "the greatest entertainer working in the country today" (of course they could have been kidding). And Lenny's comedic turn on Vegas-era Anthony Newley won the praise of no less a potential critic than Newley's daughter, Tara. "(I Wanna Do) Chanukah Wit' Jew" was a streaming track last Christmas (though I didn't see it then anyway), but, this year, you can download it free from Soundcloud. As Hanukkah songs go, this one is funky, fresh, funny and free. Dig in.
Every year, Indie Folk/Chamber Pop artist Ben Smith gives us a new digital Christmas single (with an "A" and "B" side, no less). As you can see, we're up to Vol. 6.
The "B" side, "She's Christmas Eve" I have mixed feelings about. I like the concept--that Joseph loved Mary just like any of us would love someone. He's no wiseman searching the sky, He's found every star in Mary's eyes See? That's nice. I like that. But the song begins taking on a feel that Joseph is being played for a fool. I don't think that was Ben's intention, but, after a while, it starts to feel that way. I mean Joseph is standing in the corner with the ox and the ass while heavenly hosts are attending to Mary. At some point, you gotta figure the donkey is gonna look at Joseph and say, "Which one of us is supposed to be the ass, again?" But the "A" side--"Last Needle"--I can totally get behind. It's a Funky Jazzy rundown of all the "lasts" in a relationship...specifically this relationship. The way its put together, it sounds as though she ended the relationship. By the end of the song, he can't wait for it to be over. Last needle on the tree this Christmas is the end for you and me. Last pose for Christmas cards, smile through our teeth and our filthy hearts-- Hmmm hmm hmmm Last time for first noels, last time you tell me “Go to hell!” (right in front of my mother’s house) Last curse and our last fight, never ever ever had a silent night with you. Sure, it's an anti-Christmas song. But I get it and I like it. Speaking of getting it, stop by Bandcamp to download "Old Man Winter, Vol. 6". And, while you're there, have a look around. There's 5 more volumes of "Old Man Winter" to gather while ye may. Who wouldn't be up for a funky feel good Christmas song like "GorillaBot Santa"? Oh, I know what you're saying out there. "But, Stubby, you tell us all the time how you hate goofy novelty records." That's very true. I'm glad you were paying attention. But there's nothing goofy or novelty about "GorillaBot Santa" (well, except for the video...that is kinda goofy). No, this is just a throwback to the era of blue-eyed Funk, and these guys are spot on with that. What's more, they aren't talking about a Gorillabot Santa. That would be silly. They're asking Santa to come play with their band, GorillaBot. What was that about masks and costumes? I really haven't got the slightest idea what you're referring to. Haven't you ever seen a monkey and robot getting down before? Well, if you'd lived through the disco era, you would have. But, anyway, I'm glad we could set the record straight. Now let's rewind and play it again. Play that funky music, white boys (and pink gorillas). Lay down the boogie and play that funky music til you die. Grab "GorillaBot Santa" free on Bandcamp. Honestly, I can't stop listening to this. |
