Here's one for fun. Christmas is celebrated on the same day the world over. But that does tend to render any number of classic holiday tunes completely ridiculous. Perhaps none more so than "Winter Wonderland". Oh, sure, in Buffalo you'll get a winter wonderland in December. Not so much in New Zealand. So Ronan Keating comes in to record and Julian Dennison is going to keep him on the right track...to record a Christmas song that's suitable down under. This was put together by the folks at Air New Zealand and its brilliant marketing without even having to mention their company in the video or song (but they do stick it at the very end of the vid). Like most novelty records, I'm sure it'll have a short shelf life. But its fun. Although the funniest bits are Dennison stopping the recording to rewrite the lyrics (all while humbling the very famous Ronan Keating), the free mp3 is just the final song (like when they're outdoors). Get it while the gettin' is good because it ain't gonna be a "Summer Wonderland" forever. You can even download the sheet music, if you like.

As you know, I'm not a big fan of novelty Christmas tunes. I just think they wear out their welcome real quick. On the other hand, i know lots of folks are fascinated with them and other people like to fit one or two into their annual mix and there is only so many times you can dip into the Bob Rivers well.
So I don't think "Snow & Sadness" by Smashy Claw will have a long shelf life, but I liked the concepts of the tunes and I got a bit of a chuckle. So it's I report and you decide time. So I certainly liked the title of "It's Technically Possible That I'll Be Home For Christmas" and I liked the idea of going straight after a holiday heavyweight. This one's Pop Punk-ish and, obviously the message is that our protagonist will NOT be home for Christmas, even though its technically possible he could be. Next is the anti-Christmas wish list for Santa, "Booze, Boobs, Blood and Blow". And I started out, here, to tell a drug joke and, well....let's just not, OK? Third up is a take-off on the Chipmunks Christmas tune. In "Christmunks", it would seem that we have a priest or a minister and, I dunno, some alter boys, maybe? The tune is basically about the theoretically devoted laughing at everyone else who will burn in hell...but done sarcastically. I gotta be honest. I thought the premise was funny, but I couldn't make it all the way through (and I think I might have heard a curse word in there, but who knows what else happened after I bailed. Finally, we get "Santa Had A Heart Attack" which is more along the lines of your average "Santa's Dilemma" novelty. Your call. Don't shoot the messenger. This one's available at Bandcamp. Hey, look, I don't know why I like the music I like when I like it. What I know is that, after listening to about 2 hours of crap that almost made me hate the holidays, this one made me smile (for assorted reasons). And I know that if the trend of our last couple of freebies continues, I'm going to have to put an R-rating on this blog. I'd never heard of Cali Miles. She is apparently a model who posts racy pictures to Instagram and a singer of Pop Dance and EDM. She was also recently charged in connection with a drug ring in her native Ohio. But I'm not in the judgement business. Somehow, I think she'll get some kind of community service anyway (though, if she goes to prison, the selfies could be interesting). There's nothing explicit in the song or video (though plenty of suggestion). I'd say its tamer than your average Victoria's Secret TV special or commercial. Jemini is cool (depending on where you are on the web, there are 3 different spellings of his handle) and "Naughty X-Mas" has a good beat...you can dance to it. And, hey, its free. The tune dates to 2013 and is part of a free Cali Miles mixtape, "Glitterverse". You can download the whole thing or just the Christmas tune at Club Tapes. I do apologize for the neglect that has been suffered by most of the pages of this website, but especially this one. At least on this one, you know that that will be changing soon. Anyway, H a v e you met CHUCK? CHUCK is Brooklyn's Charles Gifford Gibson, a man of many multi-media talents (his website is more of an on-line resume than anything else). But, please, call him CHUCK. We're, here, mostly interested in the music of CHUCK. And, in that regard, CHUCK is an avant-garde experimental DIY sometimes Lo-Fi purveyor of Alternative Pop. That's just a long, overly thought and wrought way of saying he's slightly off-center...but in a good way. "Happy New Years Babe" is the title track of a 2015 CHUCK release. And I don't know that I've ever used this term in describing music, but the entire record is what I can only describe as "Neato Keen". The whole thing is just...a ball of fun, smile inducing....Neato Keen. Take a chance. Go on, you could use a smile, I know that you could. It's name-your-price, after all, and CHUCK won't even ask for your email. The song itself (and, really, stop thinking and just enjoy) is more "New Years" as analogy than holiday. Bad relationship, devastated, landed on my feet, got over it, looking good, it wasn't me it was you, and, hey, it's a New Year, babe, it's a New Me, this is My town, now, and you're going to realize that YOU blew it. It's just Neato Keen. Grab the whole record (with other Neato Keen sounds like "Basement Lights of The Library", "Goodbye Forever", and "Bushwick Girl") at Bandcamp. |
