I've always said that there's a certain rhythm to the way the holiday season rolls out, but I don't think I ever noticed until just now that I've got a bit of a rhythm myself. And, as we move into October, its right about now I shift gears from grooving on pretty songs and mellow melodies to wanting to hear some trashy rock and roll. Weird. If I'd come across Thumper's Lo-Fi take on "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" a week ago, I would likely have dismissed it quickly. But, today, it speaks to me.
Based in Dublin, Thumper self describe as "sonic death via bubblegum pop". I can't decide if that's self deprecating or overly pretentious and its probably neither.
Anyway, I don't think Darlene Love's in any danger of being overtaken, but Thumper gives the song a good trashy kick in the ass that probably both it and I needed right about now. The tune was recorded for a charity Christmas album last year and you can grab the track free at either Bandcamp or Soundcloud. While you're at it, check out the band's latest EP, "Magnum Opuss" (which features a cat on the cover, so they've got my attention).
