Of late, I've been finding a lot of free Folk and Americana (plus 800 different versions of "This Christmas"--I won't even click on a "This Christmas" anymore, especially since nobody brings anything new to the song). But I haven't run across too much rock. So I was lookin'.
Vista Blue is a band that largely splits their time between Nashville and Cincinnati (and there's also a little Nawlins in their blood stream). They've kind put themselves in a Pop Punk bag, which doesn't quite get it. Most Pop Punk bands, to my ears, are more Pop than Punk. Vista Blue, to my ears, is more on the Punk side, but without sacrificing the Pop. They're a little bit like Weezer meets the Ramones.
The songs on "Check It Twice" were originally recorded for a series of digital audio Christmas cards a bunch of bands would put together for friends and family (drop them in a zip, press "send", and your Christmas shopping is over). They did not travel beyond that (there's no Nashville DJ saying, "you'll never believe what I got my hands on" or anything like that). And they tend to be goofy on purpose. For "Check It Twice", the songs have been re-recorded (the originals were largely rushed and acoustic). We get nostalgia for the 90s, a Zombie Christmas song (you know you've been looking for one of those), and my personal favorite (because it's got a bit of that Ramones sound), "Bobby Kringle". "Check It Twice" can be had as a free download via Bandcamp (you don't even have to cough up your email).
