Zipless Ellipsis is the performance name of Misha Chylkova. She's based in Camden Town in London, UK and I find her Christmas covers intoxicating. "Sister Winter" is, of course, a Sufjan Stevens song about heartbreak and seasonal withdrawal. But, I dunno, sometimes I hear Sufjan and I don't hear Sufjan, if you know what I'm saying. Listening to Misha do the song, for me, is kind of like an out-of-body experience. I don't just hear the words, I feel them...like I'm living that guy's life for a bit. And suddenly, the heartbreak is crushing, the withdrawal dark and isolating, and the apologies a sincere awakening. The message of the tale? Hang in there. It gets better.
Damn, Misha! More Christmas songs, please.
"Sister Winter" by Zipless Ellipsis can be freely downloaded from Soundcloud. And you can also stream a pair of Christmas songs performed live at last year's Yuletide Rising...her "Just Like Christmas" cover and a cover of Tom Waits' "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis". And, yes, you can still download her original cover of "Just Like Christmas", which is still awesome.
