The name may not be familiar to a lot of Americans (though her videos likely have received some play on the music channels), but Jess Moskaluke is a young rising star of Canada's thriving Country music scene with 13 charting singles (including 3 Top Ten) in her nascent career. She's of interest to us, here, natch, because she plans to release a Christmas album later this year. Let's have a listen, shall we?
The original "Thank God For Christmas" was Jess' Christmas single from 2012, the same year of her first charting single, "Catch Me If You Can". 2014's "Cheap Wine & Cigarettes" was a substantial crossover hit in Canada. And last year's "Drive Me Away" was her highest charting single to date (again, in Canada), peaking at #3.
Currently, Ms. Moskaluke is enjoying the success of her most recent EP, "Past The Past", with a fourth single from that seven song set slated to see release in early June (say that five times fast).
Jess is clearly enamored with the Yuletide season and has spoken in the past of her desire to record a Christmas album. It looks like the time has finally come. If you're looking to get a bit of a jump, or to round up her already existing holiday output, there's the 2012 Christmas single above, a 2011 cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You", and a 2014 version of "O Holy Night" featuring the Lovelocks. Of the three, I find "Thank God For Christmas" the most satisfying. No offense to anybody, but I have very high personal standards for "O Holy Night" and the Carey cover might be fun, but doesn't really bring anything new to the song, IMO. But then who the heck am I, after all? And I'm quite intrigued to see what art the 2018 Jess Moskaluke can create with the canvas of an entire Christmas album. My guess is there'll be some real nuggets of holiday gold, there.
