Everybody's pretty excited for the release this Friday of Eric Clapton's first ever Christmas album, "Happy Xmas". On RSD, your local record store, depending upon how these things get allocated, may have a special die-cut 12" vinyl single from Clapton featuring two songs NOT on the album. The "A" side is "A Little Bit of Christmas Love", written by the late Blues/R&B singer and songwriter Rosco Gordon. The "B" side is "You Always Hurt The One You Love". The single is limited to 5000 copies.
If you've been collecting as long as I have, you likely have all of these selections somewhere in your library. But I'll tell you what, if you just wanted to sit back in the comfy chair and enjoy a Jazz album for Christmas, it was always annoying that there were three versions of "The Christmas Song" and two versions of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" on "The Christmas Collection". I mean really annoying. Maddening. Looks like this will be a much nicer ride.
All of the music on this new "The Christmas Collection" has been remastered from the original tapes (and, if there's one thing Craft is really good at, it's remastering). This Record Store Day Exclusive is limited to 2000 units.

"Unwritten Christmas" by the Pop Punk bands Unwritten Law and Sum 41 was a bonus promo CD single in Australia and a track on Kevin & Bean's annual collection in 2001. The next year, it appeared in the film "Santa Clause 2". But a 7" vinyl single has never existed...until now. This single is a RSD First release and is limited to 2500 copies. The flip side, presumably, is Unwritten Law's other holiday contribution to the Kevin & Bean series, "Please Come Home For Christmas". |
Interestingly, we told you about the Sub Pop Christmas single a few days ago, featuring Green River and the U-Men. I say interestingly because it's listed on and we linked to Amazon (though as yet "unavailable"), but the RSD site has it down as a Record Store Day Exclusive, limited to 1700 units. Somebody will figure that out...eventually. Cool picture sleeve, though.
Among the non-holiday releases that caught my eye, there are a couple of Blues 10" I'd love to get my hands on. And then there's the single that calls to me with a heavenly glow and choirs of angels singing--a new 7" from Garbage featuring "Destroying Angels" on the "A" side and Bowie's "Starman" (recorded for the Howard Stern Show) on the flip. That one's an RSD exclusive limited to 3000.
Here's a Record Store Day Exclusive. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones chose a Christmas song as his solo debut record. Keith's version of "Run Rudolph Run" was released in 1978 with "The Harder They Come" on the flip. The single was released again in 2007, this time featuring "Pressure Drop" on the "B" side. To celebrate the track's 40th anniversary, "Run Rudolph Run" gets the 12" single treatment on red vinyl, with "The Harder They Come" and "Pressure Drop" both appearing on the flip. It's an RSD exclusive limited to just 3500 copies. |
As noted, it's still early October, so it's possible some more RSD exclusives and firsts will be added to the list. You can check out all of the titles, holiday and non-holiday alike, at the Record Store Day web site.
