Jela Cello is the performance name for Jelena Mihailovic. The Serbian artist (who spends a good deal of time in L.A. these days) is classicly trained, but has always mixed her love of Classical with her love of contemporary music. Though she performed throughout her years at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Music, she truly began in earnest in 2011 when she released the album "Clash", which included covers of Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles alongside the music of Brahms and Bach. That album sold very well overseas and received the highest praise from music critics the world over.
For live performances, Jela assembled some 60 other young, talented and classically trained musicians to be her Power Symphony Orchestra. The effect can be astounding. And it certainly doesn't hurt that she's a very attractive young woman.
Jela's upcoming holiday album is "Christmas Dreams", due to be released November 6. The album consists mostly of seasonal favorites and also includes "Snowdust Pearl", which I'm guessing is a holiday re-working of "Pearl In The Dust", a song written especially for Jela by Bob Petrovic. "Christmas Dreams" also contains the song above (last year's Christmas single), "Jingle Bells" featuring the current lead singer from the rock group Journey, Arnel Pineda. I'll admit, I'm a little ambivalent about that one (and the animation does nothing for me), which is why I'm going to close this piece with Jela's cover of "Purple Haze". I think it's Jela at her very best and most intriguing. It's been viewed on YouTube almost one and a half million times, so its not like I'm the only one who thinks Jela is one to watch.
