Anybody who spends any time at Stubby's knows I love the Blues. And, obviously, I love Christmas music. So, whenever those two collide, I'm beside myself with Christmas joy.
Broke & Hungry Records has just released this Christmas single from Jimmy "Duck" Holmes on a red vinyl 7" 45rpm record. The "A" side is a "Duck" original, "Christmas Alone", while the flip features Jimmy's down-home take on "Merry Christmas, Baby". The single can be purchased separately or in a wide assortment of 45/CD combo packs direct from Broke & Hungry records.
Born in 1947, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is the last of the great Bentonia Bluesmen, a style of delta blues named after the Mississippi town that gave us Skip James. Holmes is the proprietor of Bentonia's Blue Front Cafe, possibly the oldest juke joint in Mississippi having been opened for business by the Holmes family in 1948. All the great Bentonia Bluesmen played there--Jack Owens, Henry Stuckey, Skip James, etc.--as did many a traveling Bluesman.

Holmes learned to play the Blues from Henry Stuckey and the other local musicians and played casually at the Blue Front for decades. But, outside of an Alan Lomax field recording from around 1970, Jimmy didn't cut his first record until 2005 when Broke & Hungry Records made it their mission to preserve and promote country blues. Holmes cut the first ever CD for Broke & Hungry, "Back To Bentonia", released in 2006, and has since recorded 2 more albums. The label has also released records by Odell Harris, Big T. Williams, and Pat Thomas, as well as a few compilations and the roadtrip documentary "M is For Mississippi".
