If I do any Christmas mixes in the future, you may find them at Christmas A Go Go (thanks Guuz). It's been a blast.
Go in peace.
This is the end. Beautiful friend, the end. We are finished, done, kaput. And we really, really mean it this time. No, really. The domain will be disappearing even (in October, I think), though you should still be able to access some back content via The Internet Archive Wayback Machine. We are not pining for the fjords; this parrot is deceased.

Still done, but I've this public service to perform. While there is no doubt that many great surprises still await--many we won't learn of until mid-December--the fact is that people who are preparing annual holiday mixes are running out of time. Generally speaking, most Christmas compers try to have a finished product by the first week in December, but nobody starts their project in the first week of December. Most have been working on them for months and are right now making their final adjustments. As it is, it pisses me off that I have to wait for next week to get access to Molly Burch and Joe Stilgoe. For me, Robbie Williams, Good Lovelies, Michelle Malone, Hamilton Loomis, Cats In Space....they'll all have to wait until next year as they're releasing too late (for me). So check the OK, So It's Kinda The List and check it twice. You don't want to miss something that's just what you've been looking for (and we've added quite a few digital releases, even going back to ones we missed in earlier months). And collectors might find some exclusives from unusual places (like Urban Outfitters). Happy, as well, to direct you to physical copies of things Amazon may only offer in digital format. It's not complete. The List has never been complete. But this year, more than others, there is a boatload of crap I can't even pretend to be interested in (and some of it is probably good, too). I do regret that I'm not going to be around to do singles for you. It won't help you none, but click on the artwork to the right for a nice one...that sadly won't be released until December (sigh). Make sure you check it twice. Wouldn't want you to miss anything cool. Personally, I couldn't resist sharing this 2016 single from Barbra Lica which is included on the just released digital comp (at least I haven't seen any hard copy, yet, although all the previous volumes have been) from the Canadian Jazz Pop Justin Time label, "Justin Time For Christmas, Vol. 6". Included are such holiday faves as Oliver Jones, Susie Arioli, and Ranee Lee. But I think you'll understand why I was drawn to this one in particular.

But its just not. We're essentially down to a month before the domain expires. The website should remain, though. A good friend (because I never take candy from strangers) has offered to foot the bill to keep it up for at least a year. But me, I'll be outta here. We have rumors, based upon an Instagram post, that Britney Spears may be working on a Christmas album. And Paul Kelly, the Australian artist who taught us all "How To Make Gravy" for Christmas is working on a full seasonal set for next year. It was 2016 when we introduced you to Melvin Seals of JGB. His Christmas album is finally coming to fruition...but not until next year. And while Melvin reminds us that we are forever dealing with product that is delayed or pushed back, the new Dave Koz Christmas album, which was scheduled to release October 11, snuck out on September 18 instead. Idina Menzel is back with a second Christmas album (this time, she even included a couple of Hanukkah tunes). If you haven't already heard, the November 8th release of "Big Band Holidays II" (listed below attributed to Wynton Marsalis) will feature a previously unreleased live performance from Aretha Franklin. There's a Folky Winter themed set from Judy Collins coming on November 29. Fans of the 80s may be interested to know that the chief songwriter and keyboard artist for A-ha ("Take On Me"), Magne Furuholmen, has a Christmas album coming out on CD and vinyl October 25. Jazz veteran Gerald Albright is releasing his first full Christmas album October 11, though it looks to be strictly digital at this point (ironically, the cover features vinyl playing on a phonograph). I've been looking for some Blues, but I can get by with the kind of Blues Rock the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughn used to make and, to that end, I'll be looking forward to the Christmas album from Georgia's Joey Stuckey, which is expected to arrive this November. The Roots Rock/Americana band Taters are finishing up their Christmas album. When it arrives, you'll find it on Bandcamp (feel free to pick up last year's Christmas single there for free). And, for something completely different, New York rapper DMX is said to be preparing to drop "DMX-Mas" on an unsuspecting public this year (though the label is already warning it could be next year). Also, and much to my personal surprise, 2019 is seeing the resurgence of a format I'd long considered all but dead...the CD single. I haven't figured out how to (or whether to) list them in the Not The List as I've run out of colors and, anyway, they seem to be songs that have been available digitally in the past...and I like to focus on the new stuff. How do you make "Jingle Bells" a sad song? Observe. Just released. Further updates to Not The List below, but first... I love Christmas compilations. I just do. Even when I have all the songs already, it's just cool to be able to pick up one disc rather than ten. For anyone who doesn't know, Lux Interior and Poison Ivy (Lux & Ivy) formed that great Garage Punk band The Cramps. But long before that, Lux & Ivy were collectors of obscure vintage vinyl. In fact, that's what drew the couple together in the first place. I mean, their record collection is just sick. Many years ago, a Cramps fan (and member of a different Rock group) began compiling collections of any singles Lux & Ivy ever mentioned in interviews on radio, TV, and in print. "Lux & Ivy's Favorites" was one of those joys that made the rounds on the Internets in the golden age of sharity. There were at least 17 volumes of the stuff. Anything that's popular will eventually get the attention of the Powers That Be and "Lux & Ivy's Favorites" did. That's why, this year, we have two official collections featuring the Lux name for your enjoyment...one for Halloween and one for Christmas. I've consciously avoided Halloween music this year, but feel free to pick up "Trick or Treat: Vintage 45s From Lux & Ivy's Haunted Basement" when it's released October 25. But we're all about the Christmas, here, and "Merry Luxmas" will arrive on November 22 with 31 tracks of holiday goodness. I've scanned the tracklist and I do have everything here, personally (except for "Eskimo Pie", which I don't consider a seasonal song). But I do love Christmas compilations and, besides, there are liner notes from MOJO Magazine's Dave Henderson, which I'm guessing will be quite informative.
Here's another collection, this one for vinyl maniacs. And this one has a very intriguing playlist featuring the old, the new, the borrowed and the blue. "A Very Cool Christmas" features two slabs of 12" collector's grade 180 gram vinyl (one red, one green) and it's limited to 1500 numbered copies. Check the tracklist cuz I can clearly see that some of these tracks I need. Official release date for "A Very Cool Christmas" is November 8, but it won't arrive at Amazon until November 15.

The R&B and Gospel sisters had originally planned to release the album last year, but their busy performance schedule kept them from finishing the album, though we did get a fine Christmas single. You can read what I had to say about them last July. Needless to say, this would vault to the top of my personal holiday shopping list. Pentatonix has an announcement set for Monday and that likely has something to do with their Christmas plans this year. K-Pop Boy Band EXO are planning on dropping a new album in December. And word is it's a Christmas or (at least) winter-themed set. Lots of new listings in our NOT THE LIST below, including Wynton Marsalis, Orla Fallon, and (as expected) Dionne Warwick. But I really wanted to call your attention to the coming release from The Good Lovelies, which you won't find on Amazon...yet. The Good Lovelies are a Canadian vocal harmony Folk Pop trio who gave us the exceptional "Under The Mistletoe" in 2009. But that was a decade ago. And, even though we got a special little treat in the form of a seasonal EP, "Winter's Calling", in 2014 (with one track free on that year's edition of "Ho Ho Ho Canada"), I find myself thirsty for another cup of Yuletide cheer from this awesome group. The new Good Lovelies Christmas album is called "Evergreen" and you can pre-order it in both vinyl and CD formats. Official release date is November 22. And, while we lack a complete track list, we know it will include "Little Saint Nick", "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", "Jingle Bells", "O Holy Night", "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Silver Bells", and "(Everybody's Waiting For) The Man With The Bag". And, with that, welcome back my friends to the list that never ends. JULY 19

Long time ago, in April (and not in Bethlehem), we told you that we'd heard a rumor that Keb Mo was working on a Christmas album. It was just a rumor, but from a reliable source. And here 'tis. "Moonlight, Mistletoe & You" takes center stage on October 18 and promises to cover the many moods of the season with a list of songs that's mostly original. According to the product info, "Moonlight, Mistletoe & You" contains only 3 covers...pointing to "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" (featuring Melissa Manchester) and "Please Come Home For Christmas". Looking over the rest of the tracks, that would suggest that one of the straight up Blues numbers--"Santa Claus Santa Claus" or "Santa Claus Blues"--is the third (though I'm not convinced, absent writing credits or sound samples, that both of those aren't covers). Keb Mo will also bring the Christmas romance and seasonal feels with the album's title track and "One More Year With You". And, for something a bit more lighthearted, we'll be treated to "Christmas Is Annoying", a song which highlights the negative column of the Yuletide ledger (including the Christmas crunch on both money and time). Keb Mo says, “There’s something about Christmas time that makes everyone’s hearts a little lighter and I wanted to contribute to the movement of spreading a little joy," adding that, after 25 years of performing as Keb Mo, it was time for him to record a full Christmas album. It's not as though Keb Mo hasn't ever dabbled in seasonal sounds, going back to "Jingle Bell Jamboree" (originally released in 1994) and culminating in a collection of his holiday sides on the 2011 digital EP "The Spirit Of The Holiday". "Moonlight, Mistletoe & You" is being released by the Concord Music Group. And Keb Mo will be taking it out on the road with this year's Jingle Bell Jamboree tour.
Dionne Warwick has recently completed work on another Christmas album. It sounds as though there will be some collaborations on this one. We do know for sure that Dionne teamed up with Country singer Eric Paslay on what he describes as a "wild" version of "Frosty The Snowman". Speaking of Eric Paslay, he turns up on the coming Hootie & The Blowfish album, "Imperfect Circle", due out November 1. Though not a seasonal album, it does contain a song entitled "New Year's Day". Just sayin'. If one can draw conclusions from a vague social media post, Country artist Brandy Clark might be working on a Christmas album. Or at least the sheet music therein was for "Merry Christmas Darling". People who pay attention might remember that Clark posted a video to YouTube in 2017 of the Carpenters hit, but this seemed to be hinting at something more polished. Of course, it could be that she's just recording the one track for a collection of some sort, but that would be a shame as Clark is such an exquisite singer and songwriter. So...fingers crossed. Kate Rusby's fifth Christmas album will arrive on November 29th. It's called "Holly Head" which, though I've never heard the term, is apparently what you call someone who can't ever get enough Christmas. Kate promises some traditional songs that you know, some you don't, and some of her own creations. She'll be supporting the album with a December tour of the UK. Likewise, Rick Wakeman's "Christmas Portraits" has been completed and is also set for release on November 29th. Last year's "The Christmas Album" from guitar maestro Delicate Steve comes to vinyl this year...translucent green vinyl in a big red cover, as you can see. Release date is set for October 11 and you may pre-order your copy here or direct from Delicate Steve, himself. Contemporary Christian artist and multiple Dove Award winner Nichole Nordeman has been in the business for over two decades, but she's only just getting around to recording her first Christmas album. Nordeman is going the crowdfunding route for this one and she looks poised to reach her goal with just over 3 weeks remaining in her Kickstarter campaign. And, speaking of Kickstarter, Central Florida vocal Jazz quintet Resolve still have a ways to go to reach their goal and about 3 weeks to get there. But I'm hopeful they'll make it and we'll get a nice little Jazz EP, "All Wrapped Up" for Christmas. Bonus points because this would not just be their first holiday release, but their first release of any kind. And, just to be as complete as we possibly can...Cherryade Records has announced that they are in the early stages of putting together Volume 14 of "A Cherryade Christmas". The always wonderful collection of Indie Pop and Rock is once again being curated by Gareth Jones. Rumors, we hear rumors. You just know Pentatonix will come up with something for December (a Deluxe version of their last, perhaps?). And rumors persist that Ariana Grande and Katy Perry are working on new Christmas music (separately). Please note that those rumors are thus far from less reliable sources than the Keb Mo rumor was. Also heard a rumor about new Christmas music from Trans-Siberian Orchestra....annnnnd thereby I just lost half of my readers. ;^) Decidedly not a rumor, Jim Brickman will be back with "Celebration of Christmas" on October 25. Annnnd I just lost the other half. Guess I might as well wrap this up, then. Finally, the Bear Family's annual Christmas collection will be released overseas on October 4. It can take anywhere from an extra week to a month for the German label's releases to reach the states (just sayin'). "Yulesville" (not yet available for pre-oder at Amazon US) contains 33 tracks of early Rock and R&B, most of it at least somewhat obscure and a few tracks making their CD debut. And there's a 28 page booklet to fill you in on which tracks are which and other fun facts. Among the tunes making their CD debut is a rare Melodeers single, "Wishing Is For Fools". But I'll tell you in advance that the song doesn't seem to have any connection to Christmas. As someone who has collected Christmas music for almost 50 years, I will confess unfamiliarity with "Lonely Christmas" by Kerry Adams and "Winter Wonderland" by Allan & The Flames. I think I know the rest and have most of them on either CD or vinyl, including the ever elusive "Cool Cool Christmas" by Bobbie and Boobie. Not bragging, just pointing out how difficult its getting for these labels to "discover" lost classics anymore (OK, I'm bragging a little). But, given the reasonable price point of these seasonal Bear Family comps, it warrants a place in any holiday library.
The end of Stubby's is nigh. So I figured I'd update Not The List at least this one more time. Our artwork to the left, there, is the cover for Cleopatra's "Punk Rock Christmas 2" collection (because it's my favorite cover art of the season so far), due November 1 and including Tsunami Bombs, The Rumjacks, The Members, The Vibrators, Reagan Youth, Down By Law, Naked Aggression, Johnny Thunders and more. Wanna hear a cool Christmas story? There's a band called Delta Rae. They've got a somewhat unique sound that combines Folk and Pop and Soul and a few other things. We just call 'em "Alt Pop Americana" for short. Until recently, Delta Rae was signed to Big Machine Records. That's the label that recently sold the rights to Taylor Swift's back catalog against her wishes. Taylor will be fine and she's promised to re-record everything beginning next year. But Delta Rae decided they wanted to go independent again (a decision made long before the Taylor Swift issue arose) and launched a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $30,000 for their next project...and fearing that they might not make it. They raised that in 30 minutes. By the time the campaign closed, Delta Rae had raised nearly a half million dollars. They kept adding stretch goals as the pledges continued to come in. They met every stretch goal and then some. One of the final stretch goals was a digital Christmas album which all of their more than five thousand backers will receive FOR FREE. Delta Rae hasn't said when the Christmas album will be recorded (the original album they were shooting for wasn't due until spring 2020) or whether anyone other than their backers will get a chance to hear it (but why waste a perfectly good Christmas album). So all the way at the bottom of this post, we've just listed them as "Possible". But isn't that a nice story? Also, we've got the line-up of this year's Real Gone Christmas releases, most of which are expected to be released around November 8. Here they are: Jim Reeves: Twelve Songs Of Christmas (Expanded Edition) Leroy Anderson: A Christmas Festival and Christmas Carols (The Complete Christmas Collection) (2-CD Set) Stanley Black: Christmas Holiday For Romance (first-ever CD release!) Chet Atkins: The Complete RCA and Columbia Christmas Recordings (2-CD Set) Eugene Ormandy: The Complete Columbia Christmas Albums Collection Great Songs Of Christmas: Classic Carols and Pop Favorites (a selection of songs from the Goodyear and Grants series) Everyone seems quite intrigued by that last title. I know a Christmas music obsessive that made his own "Turning Rubber Into Gold" Christmas comp from the Goodyear collections. Thanks to Chip at The Yule Log, we now know the tracks on that one and, included in their number are two tracks from Gary Puckett that have not made it to CD in all the many years since they first appeared on vinyl, "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" and "O Holy Night". Here's the full list of tracks (not necessarily in order): O Come All Ye Faithful / Gesu Bambino......Percy Faith Ring Christmas Bells / The First Noel / We Wish You A Merry Christmas......Frank DeVol & The Rainbow Strings God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen......Andre Previn The Holly And The Ivy / We Wish You A Merry Christmas......Andre Previn Hark The Herald Angels Sing......Andre Previn It Came Upon A Midnight Clear......Andre Kostelanetz The Christmas Song......Johnny Mathis Hark The Herald Angels Sing......Ray Conniff We Wish You A Merry Christmas......Ray Conniff Away In The Manger (with Percy Faith and his Orchestra)......Mahalia Jackson Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer......The Harry Simeone Chorale Christmas Is......The Harry Simeone Chorale The Christmas Waltz......Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence Silent Night......Mark Lindsay O Little Town Of Bethlehem......Mark Lindsay It Came Upon A Midnight Clear......Gary Puckett O Holy Night......Gary Puckett What Child Is This......Mark Lindsay We Need A Little Christmas......Skitch Henderson Christmas Medley......Peter Nero It's expected that there will be more albums in that series in the years ahead. OK. On with Not The List. OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE UNKNOWN
But you've got two weeks (until 9/14) to get in on the early "partnership"/crowdfunding/bundlemania/pre-order with Leah. Official release could be as early as late September or as late as November. When July ends, so, too, will end your opportunity to grab 5 discs worth of free Christmas music representing some of the best free Christmas music we've featured in our 9 year run (and some that goes back even further). This is our last mix, here. Stubby's will be gone come October, and I'm not intending to do another Halloween mix. So this is it. (If it helps, I see that we've been archived by The WayBack Machine on Internet Archives). I'm already hard at work preparing some good stuff for the Christmas season at The Fa. It's a different kind of place, but a place I so enjoyed being a big part of before Stubby's (and family obligations) ate up all of my time. And if I come across some new releases (and free delights) that make me feel like the brightest bulb on a string of Christmas lights, you know I'll be posting about it there or at IMWAN...or both. Before we go, you might also want to bookmark some of our Festive Friends. In so many ways, Stubby's wouldn't have been nearly as good without them. Still got a few months to go, if something exciting happens. Should have another installment of Coming Attractions for you in the next week or so. Indeed, we've got our first full coming release preview already--cover art and track list included. Wanna see? 1. The Family Piano 2. Angels 3. Bring Daddy Home For Christmas 4. Reindeer On The Roof 5. Silent Night 6. Hallelujah Emmanuel 7. Down Home Christmas 8. South Alabama Christmas 9. Don’t Go Pullin’ On Santa Claus’ Beard 10. Amazing Grace "Down Home Christmas", The Oak Ridge Boys' EIGHTH holiday record, is scheduled for release October 25. So you've got that to look forward to...which is nice. And now back to the mysteries presented by the Hallmark channel. Such as...why does every woman in America look like Candace Cameron Bure? Why is one of out every three men named Nicholas? How is it that there are no plain or unattractive people anywhere...not even the extras? And how is it that there are no blue collar workers anywhere and that all these high powered professional executive types (and royalty)--men and women alike--always have time to bake Christmas cookies? Also, taste is a subjective thing, but virtually ever Christmas tree in a Hallmark movie is ugly to my eyes. Too...."elegant" and antiseptic for my taste. Give me an old fashioned hot mess with lots and lots of color. If nothing else, I have learned that every chance meeting leads to romance, that every story ends with a kiss, and, most importantly, that kissing causes snow to fall. Remember that if you're dreaming of a white Christmas this year. So...look, I know I've been saying this every year for the last six or seven, but, in all likelihood, Stubby's will not be back for the 2019 Christmas season. Lots of reasons for that but, at the core, I just don't want to do it anymore. I want to lay back and enjoy the season in the ways I used to (the nice thing about searching for Christmas music without a blog is that you can stop when you're burned out). I will likely be posting more at Imwan and The Fa than I have since Stubby's came along, so I'm not vanishing from the face of the earth. And our Festive Friends, to the right, will keep you informed (as they always do). The Stubby's domain expires in October. I may or may not renew. There's an actual url for this thing somewhere which, hopefully, I can locate and post for you so that the site won't just disappear. And, because there's no pressure in the offseason, I may post, now and then, between now and October (though I really have a lot of stuff I need to be doing). So, anyway, the latest news is a planned Christmas album from Lennie Gallant. The Canadian Country singer had one of my favorite singles from 2018, "Christmas Day On Planet Earth". He expects at least half the album to be original material, with "a couple of interpretations" completing the set. And, apparently, Billy Corgan is actually hard at work on that threatened...er...promised Smashing Pumpkins Christmas album. He expects it to be released later this year. The Smashing Pumpkins, you'll recall, dipped their toes in the cool Christmas waters with "Christmastime" in 1997 (video up top). Our full 2019 list of Coming Attractions (so far) below the video. Cher (nuff said) Faithful Journey (Southern Gospel quartet from the MidWest) Lennie Gallant (Canadian Country star who had one of the best Christmas singles of 2018) The Monkees--"Christmas Party" (Vinyl version of 2018 holiday CD) The New West Symphony & Chorus (70 member choir and orchestra) Dolly Parton (Country superstar says this is definite and will be accompanied by a Christmas tour) Jim Reeves--"Twelve Songs of Christmas" (RealGone has been unable to obtain the rights to this 1963 classic from Sony, but they'll keep trying) Smashing Pumpkins (Billy seems pretty stoked by the idea) Sovereign Grace (Worship group planning 3rd Christmas album) Various--"Seasonal Favorites, Vol. 5" (Yet another indispensable collection of Surf Rock, etc., from Double Crown) |
