The Blue Hawaiians are recording at Capitol Studios without benefit of a label. And that's where we all come in. For the new Christmas record, working title "Christmas Eve", The Blue Hawaiians are going Kickstarter. As always, with Kickstarter, there are a slew of goodies--er, incentives--available depending upon the amount of your contribution. There are posters and CDs and vinyl (a 2-LP set, this Christmas album will be), t-shirts, surfing lessons, more CDs, and, dude, a custom surfboard by Brawner Boards (only one of those available). How cool is that, brah? Kawabunga!!! And, as always with Kickstarter, the project will only be funded (and you will only be charged) if the band reaches their funding goal. There's just a little over a month to get on board (no pun intended) with this surfing soiree. 13 Christmas classics (medleys bump it to 17) plus one hidden track. Expect the finished product this December, if not before. And WE get to make the magic happen. All the info you'll need to know to join with the Blue Hawaiians on this most excellent journey can be found on their Kickstarter project page. And here's the cool video that should sell you if you're still unsure.
It's been 20 years since the album "Christmas On Big Island" from the Blue Hawaiians. That's a long time to wait for an encore. But our wait was not in vain. The Blue Hawaiians have returned to the studio to concoct an all new batch of their trademark instrumental holiday punch--blending rock, blues, and surf with swing and exotica (and just a touch of pineapple and cinnamon). And nothing says Christmas like a surf and exotica Christmas luau. "Christmas On Big Island" is considered one of the modern Christmas classics of holiday records--pretty much an essential disc for any serious Christmas music collector (and for most of the not-so serious lovers of holiday sounds as well).

B.B. King is gone. He's gone away. The son of Mississippi sharecroppers who grew up to be the best known Bluesman in the world--and one of the few to ever cross over to Top 40 radio and chart success--passed away late Thursday according to his attorney, Brent Bryson. Long after he'd become an icon and a very wealthy man, B.B. King continued working harder than anyone this side of James Brown, performing live 250-300 nights a year well into his eighties. There are a lot of artists I regret not having seen perform live before they passed during my lifetime. But I saw B.B. A couple of times. He had a magic and charisma that transcended his music. Can't really explain it, but he had it. I'm sure I don't have to tell you about his Christmas music. As this is (primarily) a Christmas music blog, I suppose I should post a Christmas song, here. But there's only one song I really want to hear right now. Good night, sweet King. Thanks for all the music. And one of my personal favorites. Sunday is Mother's Day--don't you dare forget it. Being as its my first Mother's Day since Mom passed, I'm feeling a bit sentimental. There were plenty of opportunities, during the year, to celebrate Mom--birthday, anniversary, Christmas--but Mother's Day was always The Day, if you know what I'm saying. As it happens, Belles & Whistles, a mother/daughter country duo, dropped a song in my in-box today that fit the theme. I enjoyed it so why wouldn't I pass it on to you? "Daughter of Mine" can be picked up via Amazon MP3 or iTunes. Of course, that had me looking around a little bit and I have to admit Taylor Swift's simple "The Best Day" from "Fearless" put a little moisture in the eyes. Always liked Taylor. She's always struck me as absolutely genuine. At the end of the day, though, I have never been able to let Mother's Day pass without a nod to the Intruders and the classic "I'll Always Love My Mama". I'll say it again. Sunday is Mother's Day. Don't you dare forget it. |
