Dave Bazan's management team has apparently informed one of our loyal readers that Dave will NOT be doing a compilation album this year featuring his previously released 7" Christmas singles.

Somebody really needs to have a talk with Dave, then. Because he's certainly been leaving the impression that he is with everyone who has published an interview with him this week.

FEELING NOSTALGIC?

Europe's all a-buzz (in America, we'd be all a-Twitter) with news that Modern Talking will be entering the Christmas derby this year. Unfortunately, I don't speak German or French (and Google wasn't in a translating mood), so I really can't tell you anything about the release other than the title--"Peace On Earth (Winter In My Heart)". I'm not even sure if it's an album, EP or single, though we do have an Amazon pre-order link already. And I am inclined to believe this is a new recording, since the band has been touring this year after an eight year hiatus.

Modern Talking scored no hits on this side of the Atlantic during their heyday in the 80s, nor during their first comeback in the late 90s, but you may have heard a few of the Europop pair's grooves in the dance clubs. Their biggest hits in Europe included "You're My Heart, You're My Soul", "You Can Win If You Want", and "Atlantis Is Calling". Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders did release the seasonal track "Give Me Peace On Earth" in 1986 (which doesn't actually mention Christmas or anything related...except of course "Peace on Earth") and recorded another, "It's Christmas", in 1987. And the synthpop New Wavers are certainly not beyond revisiting their old hits. We'll have to wait a bit to find out what this one is, but if you were a fan of groups like ABC, Heaven 17, and the Pet Shop Boys, you might want to look into this one (I can practically hear someone screaming at their monitor, "Modern Talking is nothing like those bands!").

Winter is always a popular theme for artists looking to take advantage of the seasonal market without locking themselves into a "Christmas" corner. A lot of times, even, the only thing "Winter" is the title of the album.

I haven't heard enough about Secret Garden's "Winter Poem" album to know how deep the seasonal tie-in goes. But I have heard one of the vocal tracks and that's enough to interest me musically.

Secret Garden consists, primarily, of Norwegian pianist Rolf Løvland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and, together, they make very beautiful music with appeal to audiences of New Age, Classical, Celtic and Pop. The duo scored their big breakthrough in 1995 when their instrumental performance of "Nocturne" took top honors in the Eurovision song contest. It was the first and only time an instrumental has taken first place. Since then, Secret Garden has released 6 albums and sold over 3 million copies world wide.

"Winter Poem" features all new music written by Løvland. Most of the tracks are instrumentals, but three vocal performances are included. The one I heard, "The Dream", features Moya Brennan of Clannad and it is stunning. I'll be honest; I didn't pay all that much attention to the lyrics because Moya's performance was so emotive and evocative, the lyrics were almost superfluous. Moya imbues the song with the kind of longing I frequently associate with some of the great songs of the season.

The one title that is clearly of interest to us here is "All On A Christmas Morning", this one featuring the vocals of Irish lass Fionnuala Gill. The third vocal track is "Powered By Nature", sung by Espen Grjotheim and Tracey Campbell. The titles of the instrumental pieces were not in the materials I read.

"Winter Poem" sports a release date of November 8.

Virtually every year, one of Indie's finest, David Bazan thrills his fans with the release of a limited edition 7" vinyl Christmas single in various vinyl colors. And let's just say up front that the plan is that there will be a 7" Christmas single this year as well.

But just as Saint Etienne did last year, this year David will be collecting up all those singles and putting them on a Christmas album. Knowing Dave, the album is likely to be limited. And it's almost certain to be released on vinyl. Whether or not there's a CD...that's the question. In the past, Dave's Christmas singles have arrived anywhere from early October to mid November. No announcement yet. We'll keep our eyes and ears peeled and you do the same.

Eddie Floyd, who wrote the multi-generational R&B smash "Knock On Wood" and many other Soul hits, says he'll be releasing a Christmas album this year. Floyd is currently on tour with the Stax legacy tour, along with Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Lester Snell.

"I was inspired to do the Christmas album by my grandchildren's visits and seeing them going through changes each Christmas. I've never written about that before, and decided to do it."

Floyd, who began his career with the doo wop Falcons, sang with that group on the 1957 Christmas song "Can This Be Christmas" and recorded the song solo in 1964 (backed with "I'll Be Home For Christmas"). He also released "Special Christmas Day" on Malaco in the 70s and recorded "I Want To Wish You A Merry Christmas" for the bizarre "It's A Waffle House Christmas" CD in 2001 (most of which was by "Pac Man Fever" dudes Buckner & Garcia, who owned the chain). But, aside from the Falcons track, none of those songs is currently in print and Floyd has not previously released a full Christmas album.

Expect Floyd to keep it real. "I realize there are new styles that have come up after what I did, but they wouldn't work for me. I'll let someone else do that with the songs, because I want to stay rhythm and blues and doo wop."

Finally, there's a Country album we have listed as an Import on our List for October 25. But it looks as though you'll be able to get it domestically, as well. Sort of. "The Country Christmas Collection" will be available in America exclusively through Colonial Candle as part of a holiday gift set. For a price of about $25, you'll get the CD and an 8 ounce Holiday Sparkle fragrance candle. The set will show up on Colonial's web site sometime in October and, when it does, we'll link you up through The List.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY IN NOVEMBER IN SEPTEMBER (ALMOST OCTOBER)

One of the really neat things about being Christmas music obsessed is that you come across all kinds of artists you otherwise would never have heard of. Look at my favorites from last year; as a non-obsessed individual, I might conceivably have found 2 or 3 of those releases...but probably not even.

Elisabeth Lohninger is such a discovery. A Jazz and pop vocalist based in New York City, Elisabeth has just completed her Christmas album, "Christmas In July", and the official release date has been set for November 15th.

Really, I was just doing my usual google thing when I came across Elisabeth's blog. Scanning the first paragraph quickly, my eyes fell upon the phrase "a mystical land called New Jersey". Having lived there a good many years (a good many years ago), I knew the description was precisely accurate and so I read further.

"My bank account yawns blearily at me, as I try to extract another nickel from its dark recesses, and the evil credit card man is waiting around the corner with his long sharp knife, ready to extract tribute for the debt I might have to incur in order to give this little baby a chance in the harsh, big world out there."

Oh, man, I think I'm in love. This woman has such a poetic soul, I don't even care if she can sing.

...But can she sing? (Yeah, I know I said I didn't care; I'm fickle like that.)

Followed the links to Elisabeth's ReverbNation spot and played a few tunes. Oh, yeah! She can sing!

And so I'm marking November 15th on the calendar on the wall and I'll be waiting to see what holiday presents Elisabeth has placed beneath the tree. And we'll have "Christmas In July" in November.

To tease and tempt you with a taste of Elisabeth Lohninger, I've borrowed her version of Joni Mitchell's "River", which you can find on her 2010 release "Songs Of Love And Destruction". Mmmmm. Tastes like cinnamon sticks and candy canes, like pumpkin pie and gingerbread. It tastes like more.

THE SEASON OF GIVING

Christmas is a season of giving and its always been about children, first and foremost. Through the Children's Holiday Magic Project, you can give the gift of song and story to the kids in Children's Hospitals across the country (in fact, I believe last year the program included children in Singapore).

The Holiday Magic program began in 2003 when Jeff Gelder was tasked with developing an idea that would help enhance his community. The program was an instant success and has expanded every year. And, every year, more and more hospitals request to be included.

For each $10 donated, a child in a hospital receives a "Holiday Magic" CD of their very own. The CDs, themselves, feature a full holiday story woven through the songs and poems and other fully recorded CD ready submissions from people everywhere. The running story features professional voice artists who donate their time and talent to help brighten the holidays for sick children and their families. I believe the submission period for this year has closed, but its never too early to start planning for next year.

Right now, it's your financial donations the Children's Holiday Magic Project needs. The more they raise, the more cheer can be delivered to hospital bound children this holiday season. MORE CHRISTMAS COMING

September 27 is the first big seasonal release day on this year's calendar, with holiday sets from Ricky Scaggs, Harry Connick Jr., and Amy Grant hitting the shelves along with the latest 2-disc WOW Christmas set. The month to come will feature even bigger names and many many more holiday collections. We mentioned yesterday that, rumors aside, announcements of definite Christmas releases just keep on coming. Not a Bieber in the bunch but here's a few new to chew.

Jigsaw Seen has been around for better than 20 Alt Rockin' years. Described as "cool and eclectic", their debut single was "Jim Is The Devil" in 1989. But, for their second single, the band went right to the Christmas music--tracking a wonderful version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" that remains a staple of college and Alt Rock holiday playlists to this day. Jigsaw Seen was bitten by the Christmas bug again in 2006, when they released the "What About Christmas?" EP. For 2011, they opted for a full album and chose a Winter theme rather than a strictly Christmas theme.

"Winterland" is nearly all original material, save for the cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Circle Of Steel", and, for that one, the band recruited Dave Davies of the Kinks for vocal contributions. "Winterland" will be released on both CD and vinyl on November 15. The name "David Ian" might not mean anything to you, but the name Dave Ghazarian might. The longtime guitarist for rock band Superchick is trading his guitar for piano and going all classic jazz for his solo Christmas effort.

"Vintage Christmas", due November 15, features classic holiday tunes presented in relaxed, warm, and swinging arrangements. I haven't heard any song samples yet, but I'm guessing this will be a nice addition to the collections of folks who enjoyed the lounge sound of the "Christmas Cocktails" series.

Ian went with a jazz trio formula for the album, though some of the tracks feature vocals from Acacia (of the sister duo Tal and Acacia) and Andre Miguel Mayo.

There's also one David Ian original on the set, "Christmas Time With You", which was inspired by a long-distance relationship with the woman he eventually married.

Dana Jorgensen has a nice upbeat pop/rock sound, tailor made for today's chart scene. His debut album, "Everything Is Beautiful", was released in April and has been critically well received and been a hit with Contemporary Christian audiences world wide.

For his second project, Dana has just finished recording a Christmas EP called "Christmas And Hymns". The set includes traditional Christmas carols "O Holy Night", "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", "Come Thou Font Of Every Blessing" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" plus the original song "When Love First Cried".

I'm personally curious to see what approach Jorgensen took with the ancient carols. I'd like to see him give those songs a contemporary workout, but I suspect that's not the direction he took them. The set will be available on line and in select stores October 15.

And, finally today, I've said before and I'll say again, you can never have too much Christmas Blues. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm hoping Nancy Wenstrom will be bringing us some holiday Blues this year.

San Francisco's Nancy Wenstrom has been singing and rocking the guitar for something like 30 years, including a stint as the guitarist for the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra (that name is going to mean something to some of you, as it did to me). Of late, she's been leading her own band, Blues Kitchen. Listen to what Nancy and Blues Kitchen cooked up last year.

In July, Nancy started work on a Christmas CD that's expected to be available on December 1 at all the usual spots. "Come In To Christmas" will feature 7 Nancy Wenstrom originals and 4 Christmas classics. The classics will be performed as Jazz instrumentals. The originals will feature the backing of members of Blues Kitchen and, on four of them, The Centerville Presbyterian Church Choir. I'm asking Santa for at least a couple of the tracks to be seriously bluesy, but then I'm not sure I've been all that good this year.

THE RUMOR MILL GA-GA-GRINDS

There are still many Christmas release announcements to come, but the rumor mill is continuing to grind (the "will they or won't they" kind of thing) and its actually getting a bit late for that.

Front and center is a document allegedly leaked from the offices of Polydor that says Lady Gaga WILL be releasing a Christmas album this year, but only in the UK. Me, I'm not buying it. Why? Because it makes no sense. Gaga has nothing to gain and plenty to lose pulling a stunt like that and everything to gain and nothing to lose from a worldwide release. For an artist like Gaga, you either do a Christmas album or you don't. I can understand some of the logistics arguments that might be made. But still, for an American artist to release a UK only Christmas album is self-defeating. If logistics are the issue, it would be far better to release a digital holiday single this year and hold the full album for next. Everywhere. And then there's the whole issue of the Barney's deal. The New York department store is turning over their window displays and an entire floor to Gaga and there's no way you can tie that in to an album that's only available overseas. Not that any tie-in is required. But if you're releasing a Christmas record anyway, releasing it only overseas is a waste of an opportunity. At the end of the day, this sounds more like an attempt by the label to build domestic demand than anything else. Then again, Gaga is Gaga, so anything is possible.

Other Gaga holiday rumors have the Christmas release being EP length and coming in November.

We're still waiting for substantial news on Little Big Town's upcoming holiday set, though Karen Fairchild has revealed the titles of two of the tracks to be included. One is the holiday standard "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". The other, written by Mindy Smith and Chely Wright, is called "Santa Will Find You". The later previously appeared on Mindy Smith's own Christmas album in 2007, "My Holiday", and was covered by Poema on their digital EP "Once A Year" in 2010.

The folks from Glee have also leaked two song titles from their sophomore Christmas album--"Do You Hear What I Hear" and a Glee take on the Bruce Springsteen arrangement of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town".

Disney favorites AllStar Weekend (left) are also rumored to be cutting a Christmas disc, which seems simultaneously obvious and unlikely. Obvious because the Disney factory telescopes careers and would practically compel a Christmas album this year. Unlikely because the group's second full-length album, "All The Way", is due Tuesday and releasing a Christmas album that soon after a regular album is generally not done...not even in Disneyland.

The band got their first national attention as contestants on Radio Disney's The Next Big Thing. They later appeared on the Disney TV show "Sonny With A Chance", promoting their debut set in 2010.

AllStar Weekend's sound is your basic bubblegummish (but trying hard not to wear it) Disney dance pop. I actually like the Disney sound. Quite a bit. But I do understand that puts me solidly in the minority in my age group (don't ask).

In the same category are rumors that Gospel singer Le'Andria Johnson will be releasing a Christmas album before the end of the year. Johnson was the winner of Sunday Best Season 3, BET and Gospel music's answer to American Idol, and her debut release "The Awakening" came out September 6. Fans have been divided about the album with some hating on it rabidly, but sales have been strong with the album sitting at #1 on Billboard's Gospel charts and reaching #24 on their Top 200 album charts.

So why would an artist or record company release a Christmas album now? Usually, you want to ride the full wave of a record--especially a debut record--before putting out anything else? But Da Gospel Truth reports a Le'Andria Christmas album this year is a 95% certainty. Well, if the spirit so moves her, I'm up for it. I'm up for just about anything.

We've got the track list and cover art for Tommy Emmanuel's long awaited Christmas album. As Tommy hails from Australia, some of his stuff makes it's way to America a bit late or as Imports only, but "All I Want For Christmas" will get a domestic release here (at a downright affordable price) on October 25. FIRST SINGLES POST OF THE YEAR

Among our most popular posts last season were the ones devoted to new Christmas singles--be they vinyl, CD, or digital download releases.

It's really a bit early in the season for holiday singles; that action doesn't usually get hot until around Halloween. But we've got a few of interest and one noteworthy slab of vinyl to lead with, so what the hey?

I don't think there's a Christmas music collector alive who isn't familiar with the record "F#ck Christmas" by L.A.'s seminal punk rock band Fear. It wasn't the irreverence of the thing that made it a classic; it was the fact that it was actually very good. An anti-Christmas sentiment, to be sure. But, at just 47 seconds in length, pithy and to the point. Pure punk. And the sucker was just...good. Keeping radio play in mind, Fear was even thoughtful enough to provide both a bleeped and an unexpurgated version. Released on 7" in 1979, the song eventually worked it's way into popular lore and onto Rhino's "Punk Rock Xmas" collection. And Fear? Well, Fear split up in 1993 and Lee Ving has been floating around out there ever since.

So why should anyone be surprised at a new Fear 7" Christmas single? Truth be told, Lee Ving is the only original member of Fear in the new group, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is actually a solo track that's been kicking around for a few years and this mellow track will out-mellow anything on Scott Weiland's upcoming set, guaranteed. But, hey, why quibble? It's new to vinyl, right? "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" has been available as a download from Amazon and iTunes since 2009 (and just below is an in-studio performance of the song from 2007). The running time and artwork are essentially unchanged, so its safe to assume this is the same track. The "B" side meanwhile, "Another Christmas Beer [Explicit]", does feature the new Fear in full punk mode. But that, too, is from 2009. You're forgiven if you missed the 2009 release of "American Beer".

So don't get overly excited but, yes, there is a new vinyl Christmas single from Fear--available for pre-order from Amazon or The End (shipping charges will even up those prices)--should you want it slid down your chimney and/or stuffed in your stocking this Christmas. Release has been set for November 22.

This single bears a 2010 date, but it didn't find its way to Amazon or CD Baby until this summer and, anyway, it's Blues. And you know how I loves my Blues.

To much of the world, Clifford Curry was a one hit wonder who scraped the bottom of the pop charts in 1967 with "She Shot A Hole In My Soul"/"We're Gonna Hate Ourselves In The Morning" and then disappeared. Students of Soul Music know, at least, that it was Curry who shared vocals with Faye Adams on the #1 R&B smash "Shake A Hand" in 1953. Here in North Carolina, though, Clifford Curry is family--an R&B legend, a Soul Survivor, and still an artist in demand. Like many R&B artists from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, Clifford Curry has made a career playing to Southern Atlantic fans of Beach Music. And that Hall of Fame he's a member of? That would be the Beach Music Hall of Fame, which inducted Clifford in 1995 as part of its original class.

Clifford's new Christmas single "Christmas Ain't No Time For The Blues" is a fairly straight ahead Blues tune and well worth the price of admission though if you want a more straight-up soulful Clifford Curry Christmas experience, I highly recommend "Santa Bring Me Some Dancin' Shoes" from KHP's "Southern Soul Christmas, Volume One". And for the ultimate in Clifford Curry, there are few Soul records hotter than "She Shot A Hole In My Soul"; if you've never heard the song, that'll be the best 99 cents you ever spend.

Our next entry comes to us from the blogger known as "smacque" who sifts through all the releases on Rhapsody alleging to be holiday related--usually at the expense of sanity--and then reports back to The Fa with characteristic wit and wisdom. This one was forwarded to my attention because it managed to rise above most of the swill he listens to this time of year.

Domestic Crisis Group is an Indie Folk Pop duo currently based in Montreal. Timing is everything and this pair just happens to sit in the sweet spot right there where the two strongest currents in music today--Americana and Indie Pop--overlap.

It helps when you have good material, too. And, here, for their seasonal single, the pair have chosen Godon Lightfoot's "Song For A Winter's Night"--which started to become a standard of Folk, Country and Bluegrass Christmas celebrations about the time Tony Rice picked it out in the mid-80s, maybe even a bit before that. Dane Ratliff and Gen Blouin slow the song down a bit and their fresh arrangement is such that you can feel the longing much more acutely than at any time since Gordon originally cut the track back in 1967 (yes, even more than Sarah McLachlan's version).

You can give Domestic Crisis Group a spin at Amazon or iTunes and you should definitely look them up on Facebook. I'm expecting big things from these two.

The final single on today's pre-season roundup is an affecting little neo-swing track from one of the pioneers of that movement. Personally, I think the neo-swing movement, which brought us such unforgettable acts as The Royale Crown Revue , Dave's True Story, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, ended way too soon. Not that the music has disappeared, it's just not properly a movement anymore. Anyway, I dug it. Still do. Which is why I always jump when a new neo-swing Christmas track makes the scene.

The Eric Ekstrand Ensemble has been one of California's leading practitioners of neo-swing since 1992. Eric comes in all shapes and sizes--there's the Eric Ekstrand Trio, the Eric Ekstrand Band, the Eric Ekstrand Ensemble and Time Machine. But it's The Ensemble that does most of the neo-swing sets. In spite of two decades of performing and recording, "I'm Gonna UnWrap My Baby For Christmas" is, I believe, Eric's first commercially available Christmas track. And I think all you kittens and cats are going to dig this swingin' sound. It's hot. And it's cool, daddio. It's just what the hep cats who swing to Louis Jordan and Louis Prima (yes, all the Louis...es) are stomping to this holiday season. You'll find it at Amazon and CD Baby and wherever fine downloads are sold.

Canadian crooner Michael Buble officially unveiled the track list for his upcoming holiday set today. Take a gander:
