You can go to almost any Christmas music site and read the opinions, pro and con, of the musical reunion of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. But where are you going to learn about TriBeCaStan? Stubbys, of course.
TriBeCaStan defies description, and that's exactly the sort of thing we like around here. The Huffington Post described them as "chaotic" yet "accessible". The Washington Post said TriBeCaStan was "an international jazz and folk festival unto itself". And The Village Voice succinctly summed them up as "New York cool, explorer energy, and outer space vibes." Me, with words, I'm less good. All I know is they're freakin' cool as hell! And different? You don't even know what that word means until you've listened to TriBeCaStan.
"The Twisted Christmas EP" releases November 19 and features four tracks, any one of which will turn any taciturn and melancholy holiday jolly. And these cats ain't just messin' around. Starting with what, to me, sounds like a solid Jazz foundation, they take music to a whole 'nother level, layering in exotic instrumentation and fantastical arrangements, boldly going where no band has gone before. Shorthand? These dudes absolutely rock it. And well they should. The members of TriBeCaStan have, individually, played with the likes of James Brown, Ornette Coleman, Patti Smith and The Violent Femmes. Cool enough for you?
Alt Rock fans will likely be most drawn to the disc's opener, "Do You Hear The Silent Night". "Joy To The Angels" plays out like a Salvation Army Band on acid. "God Rest Ye 3 Kings", which closes the set, brings on an exotic feel--yet should be an aural joy for fans of Jazz and Classic Rock alike. And, my personal favorite, "Noel Ye Faithful" starts chaotically but turns on a dime into a wonderful number that combines Jazz with an almost Caribbean flavor--all the while sounding remarkably traditional.
This is the disc you'll still be amazing your friends with 50 years from now...or the one you'll regret not having picked up when it was there for you to be had. Truly amazing stuff. Pre-order the digital download or the hard copy CD via Bandcamp. Preview the full "Twisted Christmas EP" on Soundcloud.
